Your post referenced 'first choice defence'. I've given you the facts for that first choice defence. You decide to select stats for past 6 games, of which said defence have played twice and conceded one goal. 'First choice defence' has barely featured for 25% of games this season which has an obvious impact for stability. The rest of the games the back 5 has been forever changing, that again does not help stability.

This doesn't mean you can't be critical of Ange, of the system and whatever else but you can also acknowledge the difficulties faced for balance....
Every manager faces those difficulties. My post referenced the availability of our first choice defence in the context of chopping and changing. Precise words were "We haven't looked solid defensively even with our first choice defence available."

Unsure where the lack of balance comes in. I mean it's really hard to come across as balanced when you're analysing being 16th after 35 games having finished 5th the season before and having spent over £150 million in the summer. Sometimes there is no balancing it: it's been a complete sh*tshow. It's been a complete sh*t show with our squad largely available and it's been a complete sh*tsshow without.

Didn't ghat average group finish 3rd in the league the season prior?
They did --- and they still were average! I had a season ticket at that time and was never enthused by Venables' Tottenham, who, imho, were not a patch on Pleat's nearly team.

So why did we finish third if we were largely an average group? Well, Gazza was there and Lineker scored 26 goals that season. Also, there was a large gap to the top two. My point is that having a couple of top class players can paper over some cracks with a workmanlike supporting cast, and we do not have that at the moment.

You said we finished 10th in the league because we had an average group. I pointed out we finished 3rd in the league the season before with the same group.

Yes gazza and lineker were world class players. If we had 2 world class players in our squad we probably would do better. But our squad is not yhe 16th best in the prem. We should be doing a lot bettr than we currently are.

It's obvious I am not his biggest fan. But credit to him in the recent interview he stuck for the club. I loved this one today when asked about Europa League gaining a CL place

Postecoglou laughed off Wenger’s claim, insisting “Spurs does crazy things to people as everyone tries to diminish their achievements."

“Well, I mean that’s a debate that’s been raging for years, like at least the last eight days,” he said.

“I’ve never heard that before, so… I’ve said it before, mate, Spurs does crazy things to people. It does, it does."

“You put that club into any sentence or any issue, and invariably they all come out and try and diminish as much as they can."

“Why wasn’t there an issue before and it’s an issue now? What’s the difference? I don’t understand what the difference is."

“Last year, fifth didn’t get you into the Champions League, this year it does. What does that mean?"

“There are competition rules and the rules say that the winner goes into [the Champions League]. It’s not the first year, and there isn’t an asterisk against it that you have to do something else as well. But it’s Spurs mate, they love it. They love it. Oh, they love it, you love it, don’t you?”

That last bit really cracked me up. Well done Ange, you get a thumps from me for that

Although United are still in the competition too.

It's what Ange has been doing for a while now, trying to create an us V them thing. Unfortunately, results have masked it a lot and caused tension between him and the fans.

But this is what he does and on the back of Conte slagging the club off every other week, one of the main reasons I wanted Ange appointed: https://www.glory-glory.co.uk/threa...this-time-edition.11621/page-221#post-1692188

The biggest appeal for me is his personality and his ability to galvanise everyone, to get everyone pulling in the same direction. He protects his team and his club against anyone who comes for it, and I love that about him.

I'm sort of with you.

Our second choice defence would perhaps be Danso and Dragusin with the other 9 first team players around them. There is no point looking at stats with Romero/VDV vs other defenders unless you get the full context of who else was playing. It's a defensive system dependant on an entire team, not just 2 players.

I would think that is what mostly makes defensive stats go up and down. I don't really recall our second choice defence playing when everyone else wads fit and selected. Even recently.

I mean we need to be honest and reflect, regardless where you are with Ange and this is not a massive pop at him, we can't lie and say defensive is one of his our our strong points, regardless of whats thrown at us as a club, that would just be a misunderstanding of his style by everyone.

I would actually take that to an extent if we didn't look as toothless as we have done going the other way recently, it just all seems slightly disjointed.

To say I'm not a fan of Ange is an understatement but credit to him for the narrative he's trying to create over the last few weeks about how our club gets run down at every opportunity. There is probably a bit of truth in it but he's argued it in a very convincing way. Fair play to him.

Fair play Paxton and I completely agree with you and Ange. I’m also not Ange’s biggest fan but he dealt with that brilliantly and we should credit him when he does something well.

He's done well there.

Part of me still wants him to work out, but I can't see how as long as he refuses to concede on his tactical stance. I wonder what he made of the Barca performance. Much better standard of player but still getting done by the elementary things we do cause of how they are set up.

To be fair, you're never one to have a massive pop at Ange.

I guess where I'm left is with that slight confusion about the start of this season where our defensive record looked credible, albeit for a short time. Wasn't it 2nd or 3rd best in the league for a short time?

I've never liked the way Ange talks about defence though. The goals conceded column doesn't bug him enough. It's too low priority and he always hides the real question about it behind all those different narratives.

We can't keep analysing though. Eventually, you have to make the decision. Obviously not today though. We're going to win today and keep a clean sheet

"Take me to your dealer"

…and his point was that some are having a go at the EL winners getting a CL spot because it’s Spurs - overlooking the fact that United are still in the competition and could also qualify for the CL as winners.

So, it’s not just Spurs being got at as he was saying.

(I have to say I’m going on what it was reported he was saying. I gave up actually listening to him months ago.)
