Archie Gray

not a bad thing but when we started the season gray looked a more accomplished player. since then, our defence has continued to leak goals while he learns a new role, and bergvall has grown from strength to strength with every game. right now, bergvall looks ahead for a starting spot, given the needs of the team

I think he needs more time to feel out playing DM/CM, but overall he did feel a bit too safe. Did make some good tackles and blocks though, but I felt our whole midfield was so lackluster.

Thought grey has played CB for too long and now way off his development in his preferred position compared to bergvall. But I think grey will overcome it in a few games and with the right coach and system. Him making up for lapses in defence shows he is a smart selfless player

He's 19, if he really wants to be a DM, knowing exactly what the CB behind him wants/needs isn't wasted development.

Thing with him is he never looks out of place, if you think back to games with Sanchez, Dier (both in CB & DM) where they looked out of place, weak link, to see a player with years less experience look far less uncomfortable says a lot to me.

Agree nothing wasted but it would shape his current development differently. From his younger videos I do see that he has a natural instinct to progress the ball forward quickly...dribble, quick 1-2, and passing range, and see him more as a deep lying playmaker more than a typically dm

He did say once (back when he was signed) that he likes being a No.8. We are so desperate for a DM right now though so that's what people want him to become. I suppose he's still young enough and talented enough to learn any role. Will be interesting to see. For all we know the next coach brings in a pure DM and Gray moves forward or ends up on loan somewhere.

Do we need a pure dm? What is a pure dm, one that tackles? Doesn't go past the halfway line?

I want a player than can help the defence but also turn defence into attack very quickly by picking out good passes. I don't want possession football. I want to transition quickly. Play a little bit deeper and create space for the likes of son and johnson to run into. At pace. Fast tempo, direct play. Press high when we the opportunity is there as a team.

Doesn't need to be a tackler, can also be a Carrick / Modric style who has good positional sense and can pick up the ball from the back and start attacks like you say. Something Bissouma cannot really do

hardly, he was a revelation there the season he signed. Inverted wingers don't really work in the Ange system unless they are two footed and he's not, that's all.
He was good for the first couple of months then went to brick, the only reason he has hit form this season is because he is playing centrally. On the wing he runs down blind alleys, tries to do too many flicks and loses the ball 9/10. He is much better in the 10 role as he has to release the ball quicker.

I was always surprised how much time Wanyama spent ahead of Dembele. We would call Vic the 6 and Mousa the 8, but it rarely became that. They just changed places in a double pivot. So did Winksy as well when he was deputising. It was only really Dier that played the 6 in a more orthodox way.

I'd love to see some of that intelligent double pivot midfield again.
