When someone is advised to retire or accept redundancy...

...rather than be disciplined for a major fudge up they've committed (and it's not done for altruistic reasons) is it a tacit admission by their manager that their own role in leaving the individual in place for so long doesn't bear close scrutiny?

(Not me by the way but a colleague).

Politicians do it, bankers did it during the crisis - get rid of the problem and then we can shelve all responsibility when it comes to meeting with the managers. Oh so and so has left the company, end of conversation. easy

I may have misread because you used to many big words gordi, but if they are kicking out your friend to cover up the mistakes they made higher up. Then if he is confident he could cope with early retirement and would not be out of pocket he should go for it. If he still needs to work can they help him find a new job? while being the fall guy and also make sure he is given a tidy pay off.

Personally i could not give a fudge about my reputation. I think some people can get caught up in morales and stuff. Life is about making the best of it for yourself, if they want to blame him for something to pass the buck let them do it if he comes out if it with a nice pay off and can get another job.

He's been financially astute throughout his working life so can afford to retire at only 50 or so but knowing the company I work for I'm surprised they're letting him retire with a lump sum and decent pension when they could claw all that back if he was disciplined and sacked. That tells me they don't feel confident of winning at a tribunal which in turn makes me wonder shouldn't the person who's allowed him to perform his duties in the way he has for a number of years have their head on the chopping block instead.

He'll definitely be alright, he'll probably take a couple of months off, take a world tour and then come back as a subbie. Possibly even for the self same people he's working for now.
