What happened after the Arsenal win?

That is when our results fell off a cliff.

Before and including the Arsenal game:
  • Played - 11
  • Won - 7
  • Draw - 3
  • Loss - 1
After the Arsenal game:
  • Played - 13
  • Won - 3
  • Draw - 3
  • Loss - 7
 
I think its just that we had two top, top players in attacking positions and those two were on very good form. A couple great players in great form in the same area of the pitch can hide a lot

Exactly. It was really noticeable in the Anfield game that the Dippers weren’t allowing Kane to turn on the ball. They had a couple of players on him whenever he received the ball. Stop Kane turning on the ball and you really limit us offensively. Other teams have done likewise and for us, having a Harry Kane who can’t turn miles from the opposition goal really is a waste of a massive talent.

If you want something other than a snide answer

- How many of those 13 did we have Reguilon & Aurier available for?
- How many did we use Winks/Sissoko alongside PEH & Ndombele (vs. Lamela/Lo Celso)
- How many were Lo Celso available for?

Spurs at it's best for the last 6 years probably is build around
- Two FBS that can attack
- A decent sitting midfielder
- A CM that can push forward

This side without Reguilon/Aurier is like Poch's team without Walker/Rose, can work occasionally but nowhere near the threat.

Add in how much Winks/Sissoko kill the tempo of the game, it's not that hard to understand if you don't have the above two and you play either of these two, we struggle.

If we’re pinning bad performances on an excuse of not having Lo Celso available then I fear we’re going to be making excuses lots of times for a long while!

Lo Celso was the 3 point mate .. you could start with the other two

But he is our 2nd creative midfielder in the entire squad, so yes he does matter.

The second point is all the manager’s doing. He actually had all of Hojbjerg, Lo Celso and Ndombele fit earlier this season but instead chose Sissoko or Winks as first choice.

I agree with you about the two full backs. Next year Sessegnon back will be good rotation/cover for Regulion. I think we need to stop the Doherty experiment, cut our losses and sell him, give Aurier a new contract (he has one year left) and go get a young, English player with pace (My choice would be Bogle when Sheffield United drop).

I remember this was discussed at the time. It was an incredibly one dimensional form of attack. Some of were saying it was worryingly easy to compensate and that's exactly what teams did.

I said at the time for me the counter attacking system can work but you need to be making more than 2 serious attacks a game because at that point we were relying genuinely world class creation from Kane and world class finishing from Son. That was not sustainable because there was nothing around then to support it.

I often mention Jose's Real Madrid side because I see them as a template for what he has tried to create here but in comparison they rampaged as a team across the pitch at least a good 5 or 6 times per match. So you always knew even if they missed chances or a pass for blocked the system had a variety of avenues of implementation with Spurs it's just been ball in Kane on the half turn then he's passes into space for Son to run unto. It's really not that difficult a tactic to block.

What has happened subsequently is Jose has no plan for an alternative. You can see it with yesterday where we end up just throwing more attackers on the pitch with the hope of overloading West Ham but no real plan.

Well, devil's advocate is the alternate is expanding the attack options (so to your point not so one dimensional)

- Bale opened up the attack yesterday (as it was no longer as easy as sitting on Kane/Son), so I wouldn't say it was just throwing on an attacker
- Another piece of the drop off may be Bergwijn, he wasn't threatening earlier in season but he did give more space to Kane/Son, his form/effectiveness has dropped and made that one dimension even more pronounced.

We weren’t playing the counter attack game yesterday though (perhaps because West Ham were 1 up so early and playing it themselves)?
