Web articles question

El Guepardo

Rafael Van Der Vaart
If I'm wanting to write articles, for public viewing but only written by me, then what's the best way to go about getting a website specifically for that purpose?

I'm going to start writing articles as I enjoy writing and its going to be something which I refer to on my CV. My articles will be on a combination of football, movies and law and often inter linked.

And, my written articles are far better than any of my posts here...for a start, I'd never use 'and' to start a sentence. ;)

To be honest your best bet is to start a Wordpress site, it's a blogging software that's evolved into a full content management system. I run a web hosting business Svelte Hosting that has a one click install for Wordpress. If you wanted to do it through my hosting site you'd need the standard or unlimited accounts as they are the only ones that have SQL databases which Wordpress needs.

There are thousands of themes for Wordpress which would makes it easy to get the look that you want without needing any web design skills and a large amount of those themes are free. Free Wordpress Themes

You also need a domain, that's the name of your site, so glory-glory.co.uk or sveltehosting.co.uk or whatever you want to call it, again, that can be ordered on my site as well if you want.

Happy to help if you need any more assistance.

The idea that you can create a site without being a website design genius is encouraging to read.

What's the score with using images from other sites? Would I need to give a disclaimer and then remove the image if prompted?

My knowledge of all web based activity is limited to be honest.

Technically yes, but no one does.

The above suggestion is good. I love WordPress. You can also get a free WordPress site at wordpress.com, but then it'll be www.yoursite.wordpress.com.

As tommy says, you should give credit or ask permission before using photos but realistically not many people do and they just take them down if told to.

I agree that WordPress is the simplest option and sounds the best choice for what you want to do. It's also used by some big companies and universities for their websites, so is extremly flexible.

I have paid space at http://www.awardspace.com/ but started off using their free plan to try things out. You can make an account and set up a wordpress site on a free subdomain using the auto-install feature. If you like it you can upgrade to a paid account with them (or move to someone else) and buy your own domain name.

I played with Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal with no prior knowledge. Wordpress is incredibly easy for a blogging site. I use Joomla as my content management system as it allows more flexibility, but is not so good for blogging with comments. Drupal is a better advanced blogging system. My Spurs site (link in signature) was a project to teach myself databases and content management and was my first foray into such websites. It is really quite easy to do.
