They dont play in midfield much at all.

Get the ball forward asap, charge up there, apply pressure in their 3rd....

Or, get the ball forward asap, and the forwards have done with it by the time the midfield catches up....


They dont play like a possession side. They dont have any patience either. Milner/Wijlnaldum/Henderson - I mean, come on! Its as base a midfield as you can have, and thats because thats all it needs to be.

A lot of that I can agree with - that they are a long ball side, or bypass midfield I dont think is right......

Theres the old saying of "its the hope that kills you"...

Well, they have been hoping upon hope upon hope for years, this year they are actually in with a shout - if it doesnt happen I cant help but think there will be a major impact from that...

Of course by August it will all be "Liverpool for the title" etc - especially in the press. Though I think the whole thing will weigh heavy on them past that...
 
Majoring in minors, I suspect we see it very similarly.

In bypassing the midfield I was thinking of it as territory as much as players.

The midfielders get on the ball, of course, but not to play in the midfield - rather just get the ball forward (which will regularly involve passes that can only be described as long :D)

The ball spends very little time in midfield with their midfielders.

direct/long/whatever = all adds up to the same thing.

I think they do quite a lot of just putting balls into an area and then relying on their forwards to go and win it.

They don't play teams into submission, as city do. In fact, I think they are relatively poor at playing against teams that defend deep. They don't create much in those cases, and have been extremely lucky in many of those games, by getting cheap penalties, lucky bounces, and worldies from long distance.
I think Barca let Liverpool have the ball, because they knew that they don't do as well then, as opposed to if they can counter.
Don't think they'll be even close to getting over 90 points next season. Too much have gone in their favor this year, for it to be repeated next year.

The last few winners of the the league apart from City have all played a similar style of football to Liverpool(Chelsea, Leicester). English football isn't inherently tactical and to win the league doesn't require a team to be a great footballing one. Funnily enough this is the reason English teams often struggle in international football and the later stages of European competition, cause then they meet teams that are good enough to defend direct football and good enough not to give the ball back when they get it. This is not a new issue, it has plagued English football for years.

The question then becomes is it worth trying to play football as it is not necessary to be a successful domestic side, A lot of our issues are caused by our possession based style, and only City have the resources to buy good enough players to play it to the highest level. Ferguson ended up with two distinct playing styles to adapt between the league and Europe in the end after failing to crack it for so long.
