Throw ins

Cochise

Steve Carr
Is it me or are we really bad at this area of the game? Our short throw game is so poor, we regularly launch it long because we aren't making the short throw option quickly enough.

A lot of them tbh. It's such a minor thing, but we never have enough people showing for them.

Most teams in the BPL that like to keep the ball on the deck manage it.

We're not great but it's due to a lack of movement IMO.

Our movement off the ball (a small handful of players aside) has been poor for a long time, this gets shown up particularly clearly at throws.

I wonder whether this is one of those things where we notice the mistakes that we make more than other clubs because we are paying more attention and have more emotional investment.

Throw ins are like corners now... A lost art

Most clubs are horrible at both and its stems from trying to make defenders into wingers, wi hers into forwards, forwards into a variety of roles and no one who can actually take a corner or throw in well as its a basic skill that I'd assume is rarely practised

Been very impressed with Lamela's corners since he's taken over that role from Eriksen.

We've covered corners to death but winning one gives a team little advantage. Statistically, there isn't much less of a chance of the defending team breaking and scoring than the attacking team scoring from the corner. We are doing the right thing of taking more short corners which does increase your chances of creating a clear goalscoring opportunity.

It's the way they throw the ball t the part of the body that you can't control the ball with, or at least makes it difficult. What's wrong with to feet?

It's like these lobbed spinning 20yard cross field passes that puts the receiver under pressure, WTF is that all about? Along the deck to feet. Glad to say that's something that Poch seems have cut out for us but there's still plenty of them out there doing it.

Like the short corner we took vs City!!!

And the long one we took and scored from

The problem with stats that take into account effectiveness they don't take into account the person executing it and the person on the end of it. There purely quantity based and you will get a fair number of corners over a season

All set plays need an amount of work done on them at both ends of the pitch and all have a way of being a threat and a risk.

I did not say that no one scores from long corners. It is just that far less goals are scored from them than most fans think.

12% of corners result directly in a shot. Of those, only 13% are scored. Compared to other shots from that kind of area that's only slightly below the average. So that's a direct goal from a corner every 65 or so corners.

If we include all shot from a corner situation (not just direct ones) then we're up to 17% of corners resulting in a shot and 17% of them resulting in a goal. That includes short corners and those that ping around the box before being scored - I don't have the data to separate them.

TL: DR - You're right, direct corners are a poor way of scoring unless you're set up to specialise in them which obviously hurts you elsewhere. One day soon, English people will begin to realise that "Into the mixer" is not a beneficial tactic and football in this country will be vastly improved for it.

just punting the ball into the mixer s hardly a calculated tactic that is used anymore

However a decent corner taken and aimed at a player who is anticipating it as its a planned routine can work well

The problem with the stats quoted as per usual is there is no context and they dont take into account who is taking the corner, who is defining the corner and who is trying to receive the ball

Is there any reason to assume that (over the course of the two full seasons measured) teams don't mostly use their best corner taker and aim at their best headers?

Equally I think it's fairly safe to assume that the defending team will be using their best headers to mark the opposition's best.

Having seen plenty of corners not even read the front post ill assume that if those players are the best available then clearly there has been no work done on the training pitch on corners, and if so id consider it a missed opportunity

Leaving the overall analysis aside and focusing on the Monaco game, what baffled me the most was that Rose continued to take all the throw-ins on the left, even after his hand was wrapped up like a Xmas present! I mean, there's no one else that can take a throw-in in the team?!

Ha! I said to my wife when she saw what happened as she was ironing, don't worry, footballers are not that stupid, he'll leave the throw-ins to someone else ...

Doh!

Surprised Stoke and Delay haven't been mentioned! stitch a towel in Walker's shirt (but hope he doesn't fall over it, kidding!!)

If a team did as you suggest and did plenty of work on corners on the training pitch, what percentage increase in goals scored or chances created do you think they could expect?
