A quick recap of what we are doing

Right. It's time to stop moping and choose the best Spurs team of the Premier League era.

We'll have a different thread for each position over the coming weeks. The thread will be open for a while for nominations and the most frequently mentioned players will be going into a poll on the same thread.

The only criteria to be nominated is that the player must have played for Spurs in the Premier League.

The team will line up 4-2-3-1.

Reminiscing about favourite players past and present is encouraged.

Anyone who comes into the thread, doesn't read what we're doing and posts their full best team of all time, gets laughed at.

The nineth position up for grabs - number ten or attacking midfield or second striker, take your pick.

Have a chat about who you think is best. A poll will be added when it looks like we have a few players to pick between.

Sheringham
Berbatov
Van der Vaart

(with Klinsmann, Keane and Kane to run-off for the more advanced roll)

Goodness how to choose between those 3.

Teddy in his pomp was brilliant. His first spell produced 2 great partnerships, an England call-up and the golden boot. His 2nd spell I thought his first 6 months in the shirt he was head & shoulders above everyone else in the team. A wonderful player to watch.
Berbatov - I don't think I've seen a more silky skilled, cool, laid-back character. He had a touch like a velvet glove and could pull down a ball that was belted to him at neck height. Crouch could actually do the same but it would take him 7 touches to juggle it.
van der Vaart - a winner, charismatic, scorer of great goals and capable of magic to produce something out of nothing. Always turned up against the Arse.

How do you choose?
Teddy's longevity wins it for me. Berba sometimes didn't fancy it and it ended sourly. van der Vaart was wonderfully talented but sometimes ran out of steam after 70 mins. The latter 2 had much shorter spells at the club but both were magical.

It's Teddy for me too for similar reasons

He was our star player for 5 years between 1992-7 (first spell). Berbatov and vdV were similar quality, but both only clocked up 2 seasons. So we had 150% more Sheringham to enjoy.

Sheringham first time round was class but Berbatov had a mix of VDV and sheringham for me and gets the nod

Are we not bringing in anyone like eriksen into the voting?

Eriksen and maybe even Alli for this one (seeing as Alder made CB after just one season).

Personally I wouldn't rate those two up on a level with Teddy/Berbs/Rafa (at least yet), but they are worth a place on the shortlist IMO.

More than a handful. In his last season, Bale was given the license to roam anywhere behind the striker.

You've got to consider each player in the one position they were renown for. Otherwise it's just an exercise in levering everyone's favourite players in somewhere in the 11.

Let the specialists #10s/SS battle it out here (and not have the losers moved into the advanced striker poll) and let Bale battle it out with Ginola for LWF.

And Dominguez

Sheringham as second striker and RvdV as #10 would be my picks, with Sheringham's longevity giving him the nod. Bale only played there briefly, as did Ginola, iirc. I think I'd prefer Berbatov at #9.

Berbatov always played behind Keane.

I think people just assumed because of their respective sizes that Keane was the 10 and Berbatov the 9, but it was always the other way around.

It's VdV for me. He scored in every game vs the Arse, and those goals were he just casually passed the ball into the net from 18 yards :) Just beautiful. Also nutmegging Jack (off) "weetabix" Wheelchair twice in 5 seconds is worth the place alone. I just loved the guy. It's hard to leave any of the others out, but Teddy (1st stint) was before I had a very strong interest in Spurs. Berbatov was class, but he could have been so much more if he'd just put in some effort. VdV at least showed some passion, and genuinely regretted leaving us. Always a yid in my eyes. Berba, not so much.
