Who is the best goalkeeper to play for Spurs?

Right. The best Spurs team of all time.

We'll have a different thread for each position over the coming weeks. The thread will be open for a while for nominations and the most frequently mentioned players will be going into a poll on the same thread.

The team will line up 4-4-2. Old style.

Anyone who comes into the thread, doesn't read what we're doing and posts their full best team of all time, gets laughed at.

First position up - Goalkeeper.

I think that I know who we will end up with but nominations please. A poll will be added when we have a bit of a chat and enough players.

I'm too young to remember Jennings playing for us unfortunately. Clemence is where I came in but he was pretty decent too.

Clem was a great keeper as well, in fact he is second in my list of Spurs keepers. Big Pat was immense and he is the only keeper I have seen who used to catch corners, crosses, with one hand. I have a photo of Mike England turning away from defending a corner because he just knew Pat was going to take the ball.
 
I agree it's a clear choice, but for the sake of argument I'm gonna throw Ted Ditchburn in there.

Obviously I didn't see him play, I'm too young to have seen Jennings as well, but I've read opinions of others who were around the club with both, Venables being one, who rated him incredibly highly. I was sure I'd read an Arthur Rowe quote somewhere as well but Google disagrees.

In my time the standout candidates are Clemence (admittedly past his best) and Thorsvedt (underrated imo), Sullivan, Robbo, Gomes and Freidel all had periods of excellence and Lloris has been exceptional in the main but they are not in the conversation.

Big Pat all day long, but I'll add Ted Ditchburn for my Dad. Truly won us points and the EUFA cup, remember him saving 2 penalties at Anfield on Grand National day one season.
 
Impossible to see beyond Pat. He wobbled a bit in his first couple of seasons but from that point there has been no one to touch him. Those massive hands, those one-handed catches from crosses that were never less than astonishing. But it was his all round game that made him so special. Not only an amazing shot-stopper, he dominated his area so totally it was rare for him to be beaten one-on-one, he had that Schmeichel gift of rushing the feet of oncoming strikers to smother them before they knew what had hit them.

I remember Ted Ditchburn only vaguely, was too young to have a proper appreciation of his keeping skills.

Bill Brown was top notch, a truly brilliant stopper who never seems to get the recognition he deserves for his outstanding part in helping us win the Double. Ray Clemence was another who consistently took your breath away with his shot-stopping. I remember him having an off-season a couple or so years after arriving, then knuckling down close-season to rediscover his brilliant best the following season. A huge professional.

There have been others that have impressed between times - I was a big admirer of Freidel - but none as good as those imo. Lloris is excellent overall but has one or two flaws in his game that put him behind those mentioned in my reckoning.
 
I was too young to see him play but for stories that are the stuff of legend, it has to be Pat.

Having said that, I would say Lloris is the best we've had since I started supporting Spurs (late 80's). Honourable mention for Erik.
 
Whilst I didn't see him play, I would go for Pat as well. My father still says Pat to this day (but I am sure he is heavily influenced by my grandfather), and my grandfather (although he never got to see Lloris) would always say Pat above Clemence. It was never a debate as far as he was concerned.

That picture is brilliant. I'm going to find that print and print and frame it for my man cave. My new year's resolution is to cover the wall with pictures, shirts etc.... so that I have somewhere to go when we don't perform as well as I would have liked......................
 
Without doubt Pat for me, with a very honorable mention To Ted Ditchburn, whom I never saw play but met shortly prior to his passing, what a gent, and a true Spurs legend
 
Does anyone want to make the case for another keeper or is there only going to be one name on the ballot sheet?
