Sergio Garcia

It's a total joke from what I can see. I love fried chicken what an absolute joke of a world we live in!

Given Fuzzy Zoeller's comment from back in the day, seems a pretty dumb thing for Sergio to have come out with.

Wonder what the reaction would have been if he had of said Paella instead.

If Tiger came out and said ill invite him to dinner and cook him Paella - I very much doubt there would be this euphoria - actually people would view it as a nice gesture an olive branch.

This is precisely what I mean by, I dont think racism as such exists in sport, its more media etc making it into racist issues.

It depends really, in America it's seen as a negativestereotype for African Americans; in Europe I don't think such a stereotype exists. You can see however why Americans would take offence to this.

This. Definite racist connotations - dont see how it could be taken otherwise

Yeah but I bet Tiger likes Fried Chicken.. like saying to me.. fancy coming over for a Roast from someone that's not white British. Why would I be offended by someone saying they would cook for me something they think I will like. Or is it the paranoia from yesteryear where it has been used as a racial slur previously means you cannot use that term. Well I say fudge off to that. I honestly think Sergio Garcia was extending an invitation to cook a meal that Tiger might like. If people are offended then IMO they need to get over it.

Spot on =D>

:ross:

So was:
"You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it? Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."

a bit racist? Or just Fuzzy having a friendly guess at what Tiger might like to eat?

I don't think Garcia's a racist, for what that's worth, but he should be bright enough not to make a comment like that.

I think people are bright enough to not take everything people say and twist it into something racial. Its like - are we even allowed to say anything at the risk of being accused a racist? Black people do like Fried Chicken and so do White people.

More of a stereotypical remark than racist.

It's a shame because some people will be on Tiger's side now, Tiger is a massive ****! Really hope he doesn't break Nicklaus' record.

Racist!, you left out all the other colours. :p

Imagine the furore if he had also said Rice and Peas. I like Rice and peas.. as long as its not brown rice.. got to be white rice. hang on.. fudge

It's not so many years ago when Woods was giving a dinner and another golfer asked if everyone had to eat grits.

My old man is Italian well second generation. If he would have said come round for a plate of pasta my old man would take it as the norm and find no offence at all. That is his cultures cuisine and is proud of where he comes from.

Same can be said with that pasta sauce advert, Domio I think, where puppets are potraying an italian family. He finds it funny and take no offence at all.

People need to stop being so touchy and grow some balls. The Caribean culture like fried chicken, same as they like their jerk chicken or rice and peas. It should be somthing they are proud of because go to places like New Orleans and you will find some of the best chicken culteral influenced dishes the World has to offer.

Meh

I think Sergio knew what he was saying when he said it. It's not the same as inviting an Englishman for a roast or an Italian for some pasta.

Regardless, I'll just leave this here.

It's exactly the same as far as I'm concerned. See the post above yours - spot on.

There's nothing to twist though DHSF, he said it because it's a racial stereotype, to get a laugh. He wasn't inviting Woods round for every night of the US Open to enjoy a Family Bucket.

Woods' ethnic ancestry is from all over the shop. The inference is that of course he likes fried chicken, he's a black guy.

I think the level of Garcia's contrition speaks volumes to this one, "As soon as I left the dinner I had a sick feeling in my body. I didn't sleep at all last night, I felt like my heart was coming out of my body. It has been difficult to hit a shot without thinking about it. The only thing I can do is say sorry."

Anyway, I'm done.
