Comic actor and writer Mel Smith has died of a heart attack, aged 60, his agent has confirmed.

The British comedian - known for the sketch shows Alas Smith and Jones and Not The Nine O'Clock News - died at his home on Friday, Michael Foster said.

Smith formed a lasting partnership with co-performer Griff Rhys Jones with whom he set up the independent television company, Talkback Productions.

Rhys Jones described his friend of 35 years as a "brilliant actor".

In a statement on behalf of his wife, Pam, Mr Foster said: "Mel Smith, comedian and writer, died on Friday aged 60, from a heart attack at his home in north-west London."

An ambulance was called to Smith's home just after 09:00 BST where he was found to have died.

He was very convicing an an 'orrible bloke in Muck & Brass way back in the early eighties, a much better actor than he was given credit for and a good director too. A sad loss.

Used to love watching not the Nine O'Clock News, it was before my time but my Dad got me in to it and I found it hilarious. Sad to hear of his death, thoughts go to his family & friends

He was in an excellent comedy sit com, only ran for two series, after the not the nine oclock news, called Colin's Sandwedge,he played an office worker for the national rail but was an aspiring author in his spare time, summed up the boredom of office life to a t..........they've started to show the NTNOCN shows again on gold,superb......the origami sketch, the guerilla sketch,i like trucking, superb.

a brilliantly funny man, NTNOCN and Smith & Jones are 2 of my favourite every shows, Gregorio the Opera singer has me in tears every time, also as has been said his acting was excellent, the film version of Wilt was absolutely hilarious
