Singer Joe ****er OBE has died aged 70.

The Unchain My Heart hitmaker, real name John Robert ****er, passed away today after a battle with lung cancer, his management team has confirmed to ITV.

He lived in his Sheffield until his early 20s and was one of the British pop heroes of the Sixties before moving to America.

Joe rose to fame in 1964 and recorded 40 albums while touring extensively across the globe well into his late 60s.

He won a Grammy in 1983 for his track Up Where We Belong, a duet with Jennifer Warnes.

In 2007 he received an OBE for his contribution to music.

He was also known for his songs including You are So Beautiful and With a Little Help from my Friends.

Barrie Marshall, Joe ****er's agent said in a statement: "It is with heaviest of hearts we heard that our beloved Joe ****er passed away last night. He was without doubt the greatest rock/soul voice ever to come out of Britain – and remained the same man throughout his life.

"Hugely talented – a true star – but a kind and humble man who loved to perform. Anyone who ever saw him live will never forget him.

"Last year he broke all his own records in Arenas across Europe with a number one album in Germany and a final concert in Hammersmith in June.

"Chris Evans had championed his record and he was able to touch the UK again with a great concert. If it was to be his last tour, he left at the very pinnacle of his talent.

My parents loved him. They have a personally signed photo of him hanging pride of place in their living room.

Though I have to take issue, surely Tom Jones is the greatest rock/soul voice to come out of Britain!

Tom Jones is neither a rock nor a soul singer. He's a light entertainer.

Delilah is soul. By the way, Faith No More do a great cover of it (well the first half of the song anyway).

Agree with the hamminess but I think that's just where the money was taking him. Still has the best Brit voice and soul or otherwise.

Delilah isn't soul, the production is wrong and it is just too white. He did a few R&B covers that are the closest he came but they still end up sounding like a show tune because of his delivery.

I am not one to suck up, it is not in my nature but got to agree with milo on this one. Tom Jones a soul singer haha pull the other one it has bells on.
