A grainy image taken by fishermen off the coast of Cornwall shows what appears to be a great white shark in British waters.

They saw the 14ft beast and filmed it 20 miles out to sea as it swam near their boat and experts believe it is the feared great white.

Shark expert, David Turner, studied the footage of the predatory fish and stated: ‘The most likely candidate is a great white [shark], looking at the shape of the dorsal fin rules out other suspects.’

‘This shark could be swimming round looking for food.’

The top predator was observed by 44-year-old fisherman, Nigel Hodge, 20 miles from the Cornish port of Falmouth.

Jaws may have given you impression of sharks regularly choosing to hunt humans, but in reality the dangers from shark bites in the UK is really remote.

Indeed, according to The Shark Trust, there have only ever been two unprovoked shark attacks in British waters since 1847 – neither proving fatal

First comment, from The Shark Trust:
White Shark Press claim is too hasty! We are immensely disappointed that some national papers went to print today with scare stories claiming a White Shark was spotted off the Cornish coast.

Expert opinion secured by the Shark Trust states that following frame by frame analysis of the footage, in a professional edit suite, it is “100% not a White Shark. Note dorsal fin shape and position; shape of pectorals; some frames show animal apparently filter feeding … It's a juvenile Basking Shark.” This identification is aligned with that of the Trust and other experts, some of whom felt it ‘ludicrous‘ that there was any thought that it might be another species.

Should conclusive evidence of White Sharks in British waters come to light then the Trust would be first to celebrate this.

and there it is

thing is though, you'd think a cornish fisherman would recognise a basking shark

The newspapers run this story every year. They have no interest in checking whether the claims are true, they just want someone to say that it looks like it could be a great white and run the story.

Hot ITK: Cain Hoy want to rename us the White Sharks and move us to Cornwall.
On the plus side at least we'll still be playing in white. And the half time pasties will be lush.

My bucket list has shark fishing on it. I know that Cornwall has a lot of shark fishing but fook me.. great white. lol
