Parking Permits and Spaces

I live on a nice development on which you need a permit to park

I just got home from a few drinks in the city and there is a parking inspector or whatever he is checking permits and issuing tickets at 9.45pm on a tuesday night, seriously what a massive ****, I said to him, seriously what are you doing you should be at home with your family instead of issuing tickets at this time of night, he didnt even acknowledge me

They really get my goat these ****s

if you need a permit, you have a permit right, what's the problem?

imagine you'd driven back and couldn't park because some no permit **** was taking a space they hadn't paid for

This. It's not like the poor sod chooses his hours and is desperately keen to give out tickets, he is just enforcing the rules. Otherwise there would be people parking everywhere. Show some compassion, he is another human trying to make your living area better.

Except they ARE keen to give out tickets they're on commission!! Some on here live very sheltered life at times!!

This, there are loads of spare spaces where I live and no visitors spaces, people will be visiting friends, etc and at that time if there are spare spaces its not an issue apart from parking Nazi's checking at ridiculous times trying to up their commission no other reason

Are the parking spaces maintained by the council or are they privately owned?

I think traffic wardens have a bad rep. Some are ****s but like in any job you will always find ****s be it waiters serving you in a restaurant to colleagues at work etc etc etc

Ive faced good and bad wardens. Like someone above mentioned, some people work night shifts doesnt mean theyre more of a **** than those who work day shifts.

In this instance the warden was doing a job to enusre that the parking spaces are not taken up by guests etc and protecting the residents rights no?

Can't really get annoyed by a guy doing his job.

And about the 'keenness' to give out tickets, well if people followed the rules they couldn't give them tickets. Simple. People being idiots/lazy blaming someone else for any issues that occur.

You lot remind me of why England is so annoying. We stick up for the "poor little soul" even if he is being an ass. Parking Permits should never have ever come into force. I live in an area that is a nightmare to park, we have to have permits. But its driven away all the people that used to use the shops near me and they all closed down. Also because my area is big enough to have several zones I cannot even park in another part of Walthamstow as ill get a ticket. So I have to buy tickets to park in my own area / town.

We pay Road Tax. Road Tax is supposed to allow us to park in roads. Soon you will only be able to park right outside your own house or pay for a car park. Is that right? im sure some of you will defend it. The parking zones near me say up until 7pm. I would have thought it was the same everywhere? cant beleive the parking restrictions go up to 10pm. Even the bus lanes dont do that.

If that is how you feel, shouldn't you blame the council and not the person doing their job?

Given the huge increase in car ownership over the last 20-25 years, what would you do to ensure that people can still park near their home if permits are not the solution?

Im not sure I have an answer to that. Car ownership has risen sharply. In my road its two cars per house at least and quite often I cannot park in my own road. So its already out of hand and parking permits have done nothing to help that. They are just an extra tax for the motorist and that is all. In principle im not against paying extra to park, but its so restrictive and like i said its ruining small businesses. We will all soon be shopping in Malls or retail areas. I firmly believe parking permits are more of a hinderence than a help.

I suppose you are right in that I should not blame the person. I dont. But I hate what he stands for. And it seems like he was being a jobsworth. I

I think that the only sustainable solution is to get more people off the roads and onto public transport but that would be hugely unpopular.

If Public transport could cope that would be ok. But it cannot. Plus a lot of us need cars for shopping etc now. Due to small businesses going down we all have to drive to mass Supermarkets etc.

Trains prices are way overpriced as well. Especially for travelling across the country.

no we don't, we pay vehicle excise duty, the tax is on the car itself, none of the money we pay the dvla each year goes specifically to the highways agency

Threads like this remind me why I had decided to save myself 15k a year (last year) and use public transport instead of a car. Just a hassle having a car.

the infrastructure isn't really there, if you are two working parents, getting your kids to nursery/school and getting yourself to two different places to work, you need at least one car, probably two

Which is what they are trained to do, I believe.
Engaging with car owners who angrily blame wardens for just doing their job would just escalate into something ugly.
If you approached me at that time of night, having had a few drinks and started having a go I'd have ignored you too.
At first.
