Objectives for this season

Armchair Expert

Vedran Corluka
Just been reading through some posts and have seen people posting things like "take us onto the next level."

I'm wondering now what that level might be? I think most of this board can agree that the filth we have served up this season has been good enough for a place in the bottom five of the league (or there abouts).

So I'd like to put the question - what is our aim for the season? What position would you be happy with?

I said at the start of the season I thought we'd finish 8th, now I think if we carry on with AVB it'll be lower. If we get a new guy in then its a complete lottery. Would we be happy to consolidate, try and get some form of philosophy back in the side, blood the players and finish top 10 and push for a cup? Maybe the EL?

Surely people can see that top 4 is pure fantasy based on whats going on on the pitch? So with the situation is as it is now, where do people think we'll end up, or where should we be aiming to end up?

The way we are playing out objective should genuinely just be to stay in the division I've never ever seen us play this bad before we're worst than the 2 from 8 atm IMO. Then come next summer out aim should be not to sell our best players but levy being the cretin he is will sell right away and as always replace with inferior players.

With us still only being 2 points off fourth I think it should be Champions league football. It's enough to show we are moving forward and hopefully indicating to players like Vertonghen that they can fulfill their aspirations at this club. I still would like to see us scoring goals freely and playing similarly to the gooners, something I think our players can do and something I think AVB is aiming for.

Carry on like we are and we'll be doing very well to make the top 8. We will most likely end up between 6th and 10th because
a) If AVB goes at xmas, a new manager will get some results in the New Year
b) If AVB stays it is because he is getting some results pre Xmas

Either way we need to start scoring goals.....as for 4th or 5th place: no chance whatsoever.

Early exits from all the cups to preserve our PL status. 20 points from 12 games, it's gonna be a close shave.

Challenge for the Champions League places until the end. Intergrate the new players and find a way of playing which is succesful

Figure out a way to make us an attacking force and keep playing that system. Simple as. This one says it all, really;

Our current Level - Challenging for honours and a place in the top four.

The next Level - Challenging for the league title (finishing in the top 2) and winning trophies.

The most important thing to do this is create a winning mentality by being the best at our current level by finishing 3rd/4th and winning trophies, treat each trophy with the same respect by going into each one with only one aim, winning it.

For example, a lot of people see the League Cup as Mickey Mouse competition but it is a platform to build on. Most of the greatest mangers that have ever been in this country haven't dismissed it as a nothing trophy and for good reason

Bob Paisley, Liverpool

FA Cup (5): 1989–90, 1993–94, 1995–96, 1998–99, 2003–04
League Cup (4): 1991–92, 2005–06, 2008–09, 2009–10
FA Charity/Community Shield (10): 1990 (shared), 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011
UEFA Champions League (2): 1998–99, 2007–08
UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1990–91
UEFA Super Cup (1): 1991
Intercontinental Cup (1): 1999
FIFA Club World Cup (1): 2008

Note how success followed these League Cup triumphs.

I think winning the League Cup or any major trophy is what helps you build, or rebuild as SAF did when he won the league cup 3 times in five years (2006 - 2010), a team that challenges at the highest level.

The answer to this question is simply determined by the quality of teh squads in the league.

Cheatski and Man C have better squads than us
Man U have a better team than us; we probably have more depth in certain positions
**** have a similar level team but less depth however massively benefit from having an engrained way of playing
Liverpoo and Everton have weaker teams and squads but dont have European football

On the basis of this, I expect us to challenge for the top 4, probably finish 5th and anything below 5th is underperforming.

Certainly 9th place and one goal from open play every two games is massively underperforming

Agree with this. 5th is the minimum we should expect.
