Vorm - 7 (not much to do, good distribution though)

Naughton - 7 (very solid, good performance, hope he starts against Arsenal)
Fazio - 7 (solid in the air, got better as the game went on)
Vertonghen - 7 (thought he was good, looks so much better partnered with Fazio)
Davies - 6.5 (Thought he gave the ball away too easily at times, good delivery though)

Lennon - 5 (Very quiet performance from him, good work rate)
Bentaleb - 6.5 (Gave away the ball numerous times, but he tries, needs to be a bit more adventorous imo)
Stambouli - 6.5 (He started really well, but he started getting sloppy as the game went on, like his pressing)
Paulinho - 5 (Not the best, had a few chances but passing as usual very off today)
Townsend - 6.5 (Got his 'assist' and kept going, still think if he plays it should be on the left)

Soldado - 6.5 (Got his goal, happy for him, absolutely NO service whatsoever, hope he starts Saturday)

--

Mason - 7 (Man of the match for me, used the ball well, continued form from pre-season, cracking goal)
Kane - 6.5 (So happy he scored, should have started anyway over Paulinho)
Lamela - 6.5 (Loved his assist, so nearly scored. Hope he really turns it on against Arsenal)

8 - Naughton (MOTM), Mason
7 - Stambouli, Fazio, Kane
6 - Vorm, Verts, Davies, Soldado, Lamela
5 - Townsend
4 - Bentaleb, Lennon, Paulinho

Where was he for their goal? The attack came from his side.

He made a challenge for the ball, but it went past him. Fazio goes wide to try and cut off their attacker, while Vertonghen lumber across the area to where he's not needed, ignoring a ****load of space behind where the goalscorer pops up. Vertonghen leaves his man and Davies never picks him up.

When Mason scores the ball trickles back onto the pitch for Soldado who hits the post.

Vorm - so refreshing to see a Tottenham keeper distribute the ball quickly, accurately and intelligently

Naughton - tidy performance all round including some decent tackles and one top quality through-ball towards the end

Fazio - turned like the QEII but mercifully supreme in the tackle

Vertonghen - less comfortable on the ball nowadays but signs maybe that the commitment's coming back

Davies - so-so overall, one decent cross second half that Kane headed straight at the goalie

Stamboulie - maybe still adjusting to the pace and intensity of the English game

Bentaleb - some excellent play early on but seemed to lose his way second half

Townsend - despite thudding the bar his shooting and distribution overall was painful, yet he so enlivened the game with his energy and determination he deserved his lucky assist towards the end

Paulinho - mostly invisible as per usual yet could so easily have ended up with a brace

Lennon - contributed, although struggling to recall him once getting in behind their defence or putting in a decent cross

Soldado - at last a goal in open play to rescue yet another weak performance

Subs
Kane - provided the target up front others seem incapable of doing and took his chance superbly

Mason MOTM- not just that gem of a goal but also his refreshing energy, forward passing and positive ideas transformed the game

Lamela - too often lost possession by over-elaborating but that sweet through-ball in time added on to put Kane in more than compensated

Poch - the right subs at the right time

I don't see why he gets a free pass all the time, while Kaboul and Chiriches gets nothing but grief. There's really nothing separating them in terms of being a defensive calamity.

What a bizarre statement. Last night he ran across to cover the nearest opposing player to the goal, who was completely free because he hadn't been tracked by Naughton or Stambouli after Naughton's 50/50 with him. The right thing to do.

Also extremely surprised with the ratings Fazio's got in his two matches. He's been poor in both. Last night he:

- made that Chiriches-esque missed tackle when he was virtually the last man,
- lost man that other time when he then had to make a last-ditch tackle,
- was poor for their goal where he lost the first header then didn't follow his same man quickly enough to stop the cross,
- and there was another moment where he left a runner miles in space and headed towards the guy that Vertonghen was already marking instead.

Seems there's a huge amount of bias at the moment with regard to our defenders.

Suprised at the high ratings so far for Stambouli. Didn't see him do much other than needlessly give the ball away, same with Bentaleb to be honest.

Fazio looks slow, should have closed the man down out wide much more quickly for the goal too. Made a couple of good tackles but they were last ditch and caused by his own mistakes. Still not totally sold on him.

Ah, it seems you beat me to it. Agree with all of this.

I'd like to rate the players as follows:

4-5-1

No player receives more than a 6 and most were 4s and 5s.

Vorm - distribution good but doesn't come off of his line like Lloris. Didn't have that much to do and did it well - 6

Naughton - are we seeing glimpses of what our coaches have seen? Mistake for their goal but fairly solid without really offering much going forward. Can build on that - 6

Fazio - looked like a rabbit in headlights at times, seemed very much a hellfire welcome to English football. Obvious errors but let's not forget that the last ditch tackle WAS timed to perfection even though it was due to his own mistimed effort to get the ball in the first place - 4

Vertonghen - looked like our best central defender of the four we've seen in the last two games. Didn't really set a foot wrong without excelling - 6

Davies - a few nerves defensively but got forward well without really getting that final ball right - 5

Stambouli - drifted in and out of the game, glimpses of potential in a below par showing - 5

Bentaleb - did well getting the ball and got himself in advanced areas...unfortunately his distribution let him down massively - 5

Lennon - one minute on the left, then switched to the right, then back on the left again...all with anonymity - 4

Townsend - looked better on the right than left where Davies was making too similar runs, tried to take the game by the scruff if the neck and although his end product wasn't good, it was encouraging and he looked like our best player from the first half - 6

Paulinho - the link between midfield and Soldado and Soldado hardly touched the ball, poor poor poor player, Brazilian Jenas at best - 3

Soldado - isolated - 4

4-4-2

Add 1 mark to everyone above who stayed on the pitch. In my opinion it was as much the change in tactics as Mason being introduced which changed the whole perspective last night.

Mason - lit up The Lane. Energy passion and skill. He wanted it, he showed great confidence in a side seriously lacking in that department, my man of the match - 8

Kane - very well taken goal and brought Soldado to life - 7

Lamela - oozed class, unlucky not to score, looked like a premier league star playing against a championship team - 8

Soldado - no longer isolated, drew defenders out for Kane to run into space and a very well taken poach - 7

So surprised that Lennon is getting such a pasting. Ok so he rarely contributed, but he worked his size 4 socks off for the team and was often picking up the pieces on the edge of our box and setting things in motion going forwards. His cover for fullbacks on both sides was admirable, but unfortunately was to the detriment of his attacking ambition. May have been his instructions to do so, allowing Townsend to be the creative outlet (supposedly!!)

Also think Vertonghen is escaping punishment for the goal.
If you watch the replay he twice looks behind him, sees the oncoming goalscorer, then merely points to him whilst then running towards the near post. He was only ever going to get caught in no mans land here positionally, and it proved to be the case. Davies was never going to reach the Forest player in time so Vert should've taken control of the situation and held his position to block the impending pull back pass.

Agree about his overall performance especially regarding speed of turn, awareness and positioning but it's still very early days so surely we need to cut him some slack until he's adjusted to the pace and intensity of the English game? Look how long it's taking the likes of Soldado and Lamela yet the amount of indulgence they're getting seems unlimited.

It looked as though Fazio just wasn't used to being harassed by several players snapping at his heels all at once, yet that brilliant last ditch tackle you mentioned was not his only one last night so maybe there's something more in his locker to come once he's found his feet.
