So theres's quite a lot of anti-Sherwood feeling on this board and across the Spurs universe. The rights and wrongs of this are being discussed elsewhere but which Spurs managerial appointment left feeling the most underwhelmed i.e. which left you feeling the least excited about where the club/team were going.

I dont mean which manager was the worst, purely the appointment itself regardless of how it panned out for the manager.

Gross may be the obvious choice partly because nobody had heard of him but thinking back to Nov 1997 Arsenal had recently appointed an unheard of foreign manager who was starting to do rather well and at a time where we didnt know much about European coaches I think I was quite hopeful he would repeat the feat.

Equally Gerry Francis was billed as the next best thing when we got him in 1994 following his 'success' at QPR. We didn't really know anything about foreign coaches at the time so there wasnt a lot of choice so again I remember being quite optimistic about what he might bring.

The only names I've left off the poll are Hoddle and Ardiles who were both club legends so doubt many of us would have felt underwhelmed by their appointment and also Ramos who had a great track record and most fans and pundits alike thought we were getting the real thing even if it was at BMJ's expense.

For older GG ers I wonder if they can recall what the feeling was when Keith Burkinshaw was appointed. This is way before my time so I dont know where he'd been before us? Did anyone assume he would go on to be the success that he proved to be?

For me it was AVB - I was disappointed that Harry had left and just couldnt see how a bloke who had seemingly failed so miserably at Chelsea was going to be the answer. Being in the Summer (unlike most of our management changes) it seemed a great opportunity to seek a world class coach to take us on and with it being a tournament Summer there would have been an abundance of options. For the record I did warm to AVB.

Sherwood, easily. I even had high hopes for GGG and Grossy.

That's not saying I won't be proved wrong of course, hope I am.

For me it's got to be "****y" Jacques Santini.

Appointed after a year long search to get the right man.

Way to go Danny boy.

Didn't have a clue who Burkinshaw was when he was appointed, just glad to be rid of gooner Terry Neil.

Seeing it all from block 29.

That intro

:ross:

Was a kid back then so for me it would have to be Santini, having turned 16 and with it being as exciting as it was in a way you could tell he was appointed manager just for the sake of Levy wanting to fulfill the promise to the fans of a big name, especially when you see how good Santini's English is...

Sherwood by a country mile, all the others at least had a cv suggesting they might be up to it, considering reasonable expectations at the time of their appointment.

I was most dismayed/angry/disappointed with Graham but at least I thought he might make us defend and hard to beat. Redknapp was just a low league wheeler dealer amongst other things who I had no faith in.

Graham, Timmeh, Redknapp in the order.

Redknapp and Timmeh the other way round for me, primarily because the end has always seemingly been in place (LVG).

But those 3 were all completely bleak from the beginning, whereas even some of the ones that turned out crap brought hope at the start.

This, everyone else there was an argument for, TS especially after AVB (the plan of what he was to bring) just seems like "oh ****, we fired our manager, who's available?"

The poll would have likely reflected that if done a few weeks ago, TS little PL run may have bought him a bit more support, but as far as appointments go, definitely underwhelming.

Santini for me considering we had 3/4 of a season to scour Europe for the best boss available and we ended up with a non English speaking chap who liked to park the bus. Although looking back i assume Jol was the first choice but then we would have all got upset cos jol was even more unknown at the time.

Was never terribly upset with GG being appointed, i was only 13 when he joined so probably didn't have a full depth of knowledge on his gooner connection, I was actually quite excited as he'd won silverware in his career and might have turned us into a decent team (although we did win silverware with him!)

AVB. Easy to say now but I wanted Martinez or Moyes. Seeing how Moyes is faring now at Man U so maybe that wasn't a bad miss.

I felt flat as I didn't have confidence in him succeeding at the club. I remember a discussion with people on here in which others were encouraging me to give him time. I did and thought perhaps things could turn out well after all, not so in the end. :(

With Gross & Santini, as a club we were less and so I had no great expectations then. We came off the back of a 4-0 loss against Blackburn and a 5-0 loss against Middlesbrough, before appointing Santini, I believe. With lower expectations comes lower disappointment factor at unveiling of coaches.

Same with Gross really. I didn't know who he was but we weren't great, so didn't expect much.

I was more disappointed with Sherwood, than AVB, but discounted this for the question.

I really liked the appointment of Redknapp. He was the manager that I wanted at the time. I wanted so keen who could get the most out of the players that we had & thought Redknapp could achieve that.

Graham, I also thought could be good. He was a success at Arsenal, so 'why not?' I thought. The biggest problem was his Arsenal reputation.

Jeez I know some people despised Redknapp but was the appointment really worse than Gross? :ross: Or George Graham?

Graham had a proven track record whether you liked him or his style or not so can't see why it would be underwhelming. Sick to the stomach wrong, pollution/poison in the club but not underwhelming. Gross had the foreign thing going for him and had done well in Switzerland so was quite exciting.

I know some people adored Redknapp but to me he was 30 years of under achieving and a known quantity. Also, having met him I didn't like him so all in all I was most underwhelmed.
