Lacking class and dignity?

90sSpursBook

Erik Edman
This is completely unrelated to anything that happens on the pitch....I get the growing impression that our club generally conducts itself from top down with very little class, dignity or consideration towards others. If the rumours of Poch being at the training ground without consent of So'ton then this is another in a long line of ****ing off other clubs.

We've all fallen foul, at some time, of a general lack of consideration shown towards us as fans - although I'm aware that most fans of all clubs think the same.

Seems that the club has become this soulless corporate machine, that even refers to its fans as 'clients' on membership cards, with very little to no personality.

I started thinking this last night when it crossed my mind for a second that the official twitter account might issue a congratulations message to Bale (and Modric) for winning the Champions League. Then when I gave it a moments thought I realised that there's no way Spurs would sanction something like that. What would anyone on here have thought if Spurs official had done that?

Not quite sure on your last paragraph, are you ****ed off with the club for not doing something that would have ****ed you off if they had done it?

If that happened I would think 'why' - move on simple. Thats just me though.

In regards to the other stuff, its a dog eat dog world out there

Baldini is supposed to be one of the most respected, connected and liked people in the game.

I think part of the reason we brought him in was to improve our relations with other clubs.

Sorry, poorly worded having read my OP back:

Basically - bearing in mind he is a record transfer fee received and one of the best players ever to have donned the lilywhite shirt and that he has now scored in and won the most high profile club competition you could win it would have 'nice' and 'honourable' to have officially recognised that - with a tweet being the most obvious way of doing that. However, 'nice' and 'honourable' are not words I would associate with the management of THFC. When you hear stories of how Pat Jennings, and Graham Roberts, for examples, were treated when they left the club plus all the other other things that go on, towards supporters etc it makes me wonder whether there is a distinct lack of personality and class running through the club.

WHether we do or not - do you think this is important?

Should we have done it when Berbatov, Carrick and Sheringham won things at United? Campbell at Arsenal?

In this twitter age it's easier to communicate in a more casual manner but get the point. The difference with Bale/Madrid is that they were taking part in a competition we were not taking part in and wont be next year thus removing us emotionally somewhat whereas Man Utd and Arsenal were direct competition to us.

It's still pretty small time behaviour.

Like a local rag in Devon running a headline story about someone from the village getting a place at university.

Compared to who? All the successful clubs throw their weight around when needed.

Whether it's Real tapping up their next galactic, Barca wondering what Fabregas would look like in a Barca shirt, Roman inviting Modric to his party taught, Arsenal's £1 extra bid for Suarez, every club acts like this when necessary

No way we should have done that tweet, we are attempting to become madrids rivals, can you imagine if we sold bale to city and they won the CL, you wouldn't expect us to congratulate him.

At the end of the day we have to grow up and move on. For the club to go following around on the heels of our successful ex players would be just sad and as others have said, small time.

Pretty much. Good for Bale, and I expect him to get a warm reception should we eventually meet him again, but we need to build our own legends and work on achieving our own greatness, not trip over ourselves tweeting congratulatory messages at players who, after all's been said and done, did leave us in a hurry to get to where they are now.

They left. Nothing wrong with that, but it shouldn't make us small time for subsequently largely ignoring their outside pursuits.

In regard to the alleged Poch approach, every club does it, and I'd ****ing hate for us to lose a target of ours because we decided to act 'honourably'. Enough time has been wasted playing at being white knights in a world that's entirely grey and murky.

I think what'd be closer to the truth is that both clubs were absolutely aware of the talks, Pochettino was in to do some recon work if he gets the job, but that there remain problems with what Soton want in exchange for him and his staff. This was always going to be a stumbling point. Thus all sorts of 'rumours' start to emerge as to the reasons why such a photo might have appeared. I think it's rubbish that Soton didn't know, christ, Ray Charles knew he was interested from the grave. No this comes down to money IMO…I wonder if the price will be too high? He certainly won't be staying at Soton because he 'turned us down' that's for sure! It would either be us pulling out or no financial resolution. And either way, he has to protect himself with Saints fans, right?

Why wouldn't Poch turn us down. Martinez turned down Liverpool because he felt he wouldn't have the overall power and final say that he wanted. Nicola Cortese has publicly said that Porch needs to be careful which club he goes to next, not to leave the Saints just for the sake of it. Poch seems to be an intelligent and calculated guy and maybe he doesn't feel he can work within the structure at Spurs where there seems to be too many voices, opinions, influences. Maybe there is a lack of money available to really push Spurs into the top 4 elite. You have to remember how much ambition there has been at Southampton, they have been aiming towards the Cl places themselves. Poch is very ambitious. I'm not sure he will neccesarily jump at the chance of going to a club that will only finish one or two places ahead of his current one.

The only similar sized club I know of who roll out the red carpet for former players is Ajax but I can't see this sort of thing catching on here...

If Spurs Official twitter had congratulated Bale and Modric then everyone would probably just have assumed that the account had been hacked again, like when it tweeted that Vine taking the **** out of Gerrard after Liverpool drew at Palace.

No way to know for sure at this point of course, but I think most things point towards him wanting to move to us from Southampton.

Most of the points you make can be made about Southampton to an even greater extent. They have the structure that got rid of/lost Cortese that Poch was so close with and that helped them get so much success. They have the structure where the owner doesn't want to own them anymore and is looking for a way out. We might not have the resources to push into the top 4 elite, Southampton looks like they might not have the finances to push past the 8th they got this season. We've lost our best players to Real Madrid and Manchester United (under Ferguson). Southampton looks like they will lose their best players to smaller clubs than that.

In reply to the OP. Unfortunately, imo, football clubs are no longer clubs, they are businesses (well certainly the PL regulars) and I doubt it is just Spurs fans who feel detatched from their club/players these days.

Its sadly just the way the game/sport has gone. As you say we have become clients of the business, rather than supporters of the club. As more money is pumped into the game, the worse i fear it may become

So true. Everything I loved about this game has slowly been eroded and it is now a soulless business dealing in commodities, no longer followed by supporters but fanatics.
