Keeping Players Happy.

Thing with Defoe is, back in the summer he said we need more strikers!!

It's catch 22 for the players. They want to win things, which you need a strong squad for. The stronger the squad then the more competition there is. Therefore, potentially less game time.

The alternative for someone like Defoe is to move to a 'lower' club than Spurs where he'd start most games but would they be pushing for top four/FA Cup/Europa etc probably not

Professional sportsmen have this unequivical belief that they are the best in that role/position etc. They condition themselves to believe that they can go up against anyone and prove themselves equal if not better. That inner belief is what sets the top guys up against the nearly guys.

JD is no different. However, he's done the "move away to get more football" and he came back. I think he will stay and fight for his place. I definately get the impression that he believes he is capable of being first on the team sheet

Well, he was asked if he was happy being a sub/impact player.

If he'd said yes, he was happy being a sub, what sort of message would that have sent out? Much better to have players who want to fight for their place in the starting lineup than being satisfied with sitting on the bench.

I can't see too much of a problem with what he has said. At the end of the day with the amount of games we are going to be playing, as number 2 striker he is going to be getting a decent amount of starts throughout the season which is going to be more than enough to give him the opportunity to show that he should be going to the world cup if indeed that is what he is worried about. Its up to him to show that he is going to score goals when given the opportunity, unfortunately last season both him and Ade were pretty woeful at that hence the need to bring in Soldado.

Have we got enough home-grown players to let him go?
Defoe is already getting overlooked for an England starting place due to lack of games.
Caulker wanted out. I can see Defoe, Townsend, Dawson and Lennon all wanting to go in January.

Yeah its a big worry, we must try a play them in the "lesser" games, its a big test for AVB, our squad is fantastic but it brings trouble.

This is where this stuff about players and loyalty bugs me.

Here's JD who's whole second spell at Spurs has been spent jumping on and off the bench and who's main contribution has been as the good old "super-sub", and yet in general he's behaved well, not really moaned and done his best on the pitch. But, the moment AVB and the club have better, Defoe will be out the door. Maybe even this January after spending the previous 3 months benched behind Soldier. Out the door he'll be, cheerio, thanks, bye.

The concept of "loyalty" from the club/management has no meaning in that scenario. And yet fans demand loyalty from players. It really does cut both ways this loyalty business.

This could be our biggest problem this season because of the competition for places, JD, Holby, Townsend, Lennon and Siggy could be the worse affected.

I don't think it will be our biggest problem this season. It's a problem we should have and one AVB should be able to handle one way or another. If we don't have players in our squad that are unhappy with the amount of game time they're getting then we're doing something severely wrong.

If a player is happy not playing at a club then he's free to stay at that club for the duration of his contract and pick up what are (in the top leagues) a ton of money for what is relatively little work. We've seen several examples of this of course. Loyalty, as in respecting the contract in place was there from the clubs.

Contracts are signed for players to sign for a club as footballers, but unless otherwise stated they're not being guaranteed a starting position or even any time on the pitch although some is of course expected.

Some players are "forced out of clubs", that's somewhat different perhaps to what you're talking of. In those cases I would agree that yes, there's no loyalty. That's comparable to a player forcing his way out of a contract by refusing to train/play/not be a dingdonghead in my opinion. A club putting a player on the bench because they were able to sign someone better is not. (All IMO)

why is dawson wanting out?

Don't really give a ****.

Not good enough to be playing as much as they expect, move them on and replace them.

Holtby will get a lot of game time, and is also smart enough to realise he is young and his time will come.

Defoe, Townsend, Lennon and Siggy I'm less bothered by. One of Lennon and Townsend is already expendable. Siggy will probably go when we sign a specialist LF, and Defoe is already on borrowed time.

Players who aren't up for the challenge we sell .

this is the right mentality for a fan to have.

am glad you see this as a cuthroat business, which it is.

just that people seem to get the hump when a player wants to leave us. i never understand why that is
