Why has he not played much for Bayern last seaosn, does anyone know from following Bayern closely?
I'm pretty sure i remember he was majorly sought by them under Tuchel..

He got injured in the November international break and missed most of the next three months. It would be harsh to judge him solely on last season IMO and should be fine as a low cost, one year stop gap, as long as we pump money into where else is needed - LB, AM, potentially a WF/CF hybrid.

Robinson, Simons and Guessand would do nicely, albeit not for our club trained quota...

My experience of Paulinha is he was very good at Fulham. Good enough to get Bayern interested (in fact, iirc wasn't he meant to sign for them a season or window earlier?). So he's PL proven

He can get all the cards he wants if they're tactical fouls..or nailing someone who's being a prick.

From the club side, we need this as a loan . Experienced player, well worthy of squad place, and a help, not just to the youngsters development, but to aid the transition to them becoming nailed on starting XI material. He smooths out the ups and downs that would occur without him in that situation.BUT we don't want a sunk cost of a 30+ year old with little chance of recouping anything on his exit.

We have had a great big hole in our CM and a lack of protection for our back four. This guy would be a game changer imo and give us a much stronger CM. Hope it comes through.
But we played a 2-1-7 formation last season. Of course its going to look like the 1 wasnt up to it.

Now in 4-2-3-1 things are very different. If we by a pure DM, there's a danger we'll become slow to transition and turgid

Yep, it will take Frank about 5 mins to teach our players how to operate as a double pivot. We even played that way under Ange in the latter stages of the EL to create the defensive shield that took us to the trophy.

Frank's challenge is not how to do that easy midfield setup. It is how to turn it from just a defensive shield into a midfield unit that attacks and defends seamlessly.

Agree, the biggest problem [ IMO] is we have had a unbalanced CM by that i mean we have got several good CM players but they are all much of a muchness. What we need in there [ to be a much tighter unit] is a player whose STRENGTH is more defensive minded and has the abilty to see danger before it arrives.

The players we have in there at the moment IMO are more forward thinking players which is where their strengths lay. A player who can see danger before it comes is lacking for us at the moment. IMO

What I always found interesting was how much of the game Wanyama spent ahead of Dembele when they played together in 16/17. We were so used to Dier sitting behind Dembele and dropping into the back four, and then all of a sudden we were a different threat in the middle of the park. I think Frank's mode is to have a Dier though (=Hovland). He has no real expectation for them to be doing what Big Vic did in 16/17. He'll have them dropping in and making a back 5.

That could actually be good news for Gray or even Abbott, but as you say won't work for Berg, Sarr, Biss or Bents due to their natural instincts. More likely we'll need a more experienced holder with a sharp defensive football brain.

That's Gray.

Who is Hovland?
