Jan Vertonghen retires from football after the end of this season

You know when you're old when:
Boyhood idol defender Judas broke my heart, won the shiz and retired.
Didn't matter tho, because we had Ledley at the back. I saw a King coronation, lose all the cartilage in his knees and retire
Then, Jan Vertonghen, fresh faced replacement, title and Champions League challenges just fell short. Now he's retired!
Can't see any of the current lot attaining that kind of status

Injury-wise, Van de Ven definitely has the potential to rival Ledley...

Funnily enough I think it was when Ledley had got to the point where his knees were so f***ed that he could hardly train that he stopped being out injured all the time and played his best football!
It might be controversial, but I think players should train very little when there are lots of matches in a short period. There is no need for them to add wear and tear.

I think players can work on alternative stuff with team mates like games or tactical talk that encourages the players to gain better understanding of each other and develop good connections and team spirit. Tactical talk and discussion of past performances in order to better understand what’s expected of them on the pitch and to learn from past mistakes but to stay fresh.

I mean if Ledley only needed to go swimming to be able to stay fit, and to deliver performances to high standard then other players clearly don’t have to train every single minute that they’re not on a football pitch and it would be detrimental to them to do so.
