iPhone 4 refurb, advice needed

SpursLodge

Nicola Berti
I'm planning on refurbing my old black iPhone 4 with a kit I found online to make it into a white one and then give it to the wife for Christmas to replace her old and brick Blackberry.

Has anyone tried this and got any advice on how to do it or things to avoid. I've watched a couple of videos on youtube and it looks complicated but do-able.

There's a firm that will change it to any colour you want for about £90 iirc
*Edit* these But I'm sure there are others out there

Woooooooooo there

Can we just clarify............

You are taking a brick old phone, refurbing it, changing its colour

And then giving it to the wife for fudging Christmas?!

:ross:

I read that and thought WTF...

Maybe add a new ironing board and some oven gloves and make it a hatrick

Yep, and to be fair, the iPhone 4 is not a brick old phone, it's still decent it's just got a couple of dents and scratches, which is why I'm refurbing it. Shes been looking at iPhones for months but doesn't want to stump up for one so I know she'll be happy with it. Just need some advise on actually doing the refurb.

Why not just take out a contract in her name & give her a new one? Won't cost you a bean.

Because iPhone contracts are ridiculously expensive. As an example, from Vodafone website...

12 Months SIM only plan - £10.50 p/m

•300 minutes
•250MB internet
•Unlimited texts

12 Month plan with iPhone 4 - £39 p/m + £249 for the phone.

•300 minutes
•250MB internet
•Unlimited texts

I have the phone sitting here and the stuff to refurb it is just £50 so it's a nice cheap but effective present for her.

I was just hoping that someone had maybe tried this or replaced the screen or something like that and could offer some advise on pitfalls or things to look out for.

Sorry fella I was only kidding, was a gag at you giving the Mrs a hand-me-down :p

If you're doing this yourself, be careful with the camera flex, it's extremely delicate and could break if you look at it hard enough. But if you have been taking apart electronic stuff before then you should be okay, just be careful so you don't lose the screws. And tell your wife that she needs to be careful as fudge with that phone, because any warranty that may be there now will surely be gone as soon as you remove the first screw.

He could put some instructions in the moon pig card

Hey. I've replaced the screen on my iPhone 4 three times and once my wife's old 3gs.

I knew nothing about doing this so just went to iFixit and watched their video tutorials - to be clear, you can potentially break the phone but also I found the inside parts quite robust to accidental drops etc. sure you'll be more careful.

If you can get a good deal for a pro to do it I would prob suggest that. We have a 2 year old and stone floors so I thought I'd give it go. Good results but it was a headache.

A few things I learnt:

- changing the back is easy, 2 second job
- changing the front requires pretty much a full tear down of the phone- lots of small screws.
- magnetic screwdrivers are a huge help
- IMO you MUST get the new part with the front glass & LCD screen combined - they are glued together and splitting it is near impossible without it looking skanky
- carefully remove the battery, mine was glued in like crazy & I ripped it open by mistake and it burst into flames!
- There is one v important part that seems like nothing, basically at the top there's a black emi shield that connects with a screw at the very top middle of the phone. This screw has another piece of metal that touches the frame. This is what connects the frame to the antenna, without it there's no wifi and poor cell signal.
- 1st time is most difficult, after that its easy (but then they all say that!)

Thanks for the advice guys, I work in IT and have repaired a couple of Blackberrys and regularly have laptops and PCs open so I'm hoping that I'll be ok but we'll see.

There's no warranty left on the phone now anyway so no issues with that.
