HP Laptop Help Required

El Guepardo

Rafael Van Der Vaart
I've just returned from holiday to find out that my laptop is not working. When I try to load the laptop, I am faced only with the Blue HP logo and it doesn't progress any further than this screen.

At the bottom left of the screen, there is a message which states 'press the Esc key for start up menu'.

I press that key and it says 'ESC..pause startup' and once more...nothing happens!!

Please can anyone provide any ideas how to get the laptop working again.

I naively left my laptop in the shared front room & think that someone may have knocked it on the floor.

Further information...when I unplugged the battery & tried loading, the laptop cited that the temperature of the laptop was too high. I then clicked to resume windows. I was then confronted by a black screen with nothing happening.

I'll allow my laptop to cool down & try again. Could the problem be battery related? The laptop has heated very quickly!! I've only been trying to load the device for the past 5/10 minutes.

So any idea what can be done to resurrect my laptop?

Thanks

Do you have access to another computer that you can download on? If so, download a copy of Ubuntu onto a USB stick or CD and start up the laptop with this in. You can open Ubuntu in a trial version without installing it. This should give you an idea of whether it is a hardware or software problem. If it is software, you can do some repairs to windows and other applications from Ubuntu but you can cross that bridge if you come to it.

Try removing battery and power adapter and holding the power button for 20 seconds, then connect the power adapter...

Bin it and get a Mac.......

Seriously though it happened to me with my second Dell, first one overheated and died just out of warranty nearly £2k down the drain. The second one looked like Windows 7 was loading, but it just had the blue screen with the pattern and never went past that point again just out of warranty. You can try a Windows disk Recovery if you have the disc or go on ebay and search for Windows repair disk, there are a few on there that are full of tools to try fix these types of issues.

As Milo said, i downloaded Ubuntu to see if i could at least get my data back and there was nothing there, zilch, everything had disappeared..... another £1800 wasted. **** Dell

Switched to a Macbook Pro 6 months ago after having use of a Macbook Air on a contract i was doing and just loving the fact that it always worked, didn't fill up with bloat/crap or get viruses when i was on dodgy Russian milfs in stockings sites. Would never ever go back to a PC, don't believe anyone who tells you pc's are better they're not.

How hot and how quick is one question, can you hear a fan at all?
If very hot in a minute or less then skip the Ubuntu live option tbh. In fact, if it heats that quick then safe to ignore everything for help and just get the hdd out and placed into a usb caddie for data recovery.

Unless you wish to take apart and see if the fan or cpu heatsink have been relocated if you are correct and it has been dropped.

If you can get access to it then take out the BIOS battery and leave out overnight (8+hours) along with the battery pack etc not connected too, this could bring it back to some degree of health - have done in the past to reset one of my old hp's.

Personally, get a usb caddie and put your hdd in that and get your data off it first to another machine then start messing about with the laptop to see to bring it back.

If the fan has been damaged it could overheat very quickly - get yourself any old fan and direct the air into the vent.

If you can then get it started you know where your problem is. If not, then it could be something more serious.

Thanks for all the tech support guys. I have no idea what was happening at first. I have taken the battery out & the laptop now runs plugged in.

At first, I still needed to process the BIO system checks as the computer wouldn't load for other, unknown, reasons but since then it has been ok.

I think the battery might be faulty as the laptop hasn't been overheating lately either. I'll have to replace the battery at some point, no point in having a laptop that needs to be plugged on at all times.

If I encounter any further problems, I'll turn to this thread. Thanks again for the advice & technical support.

That's good news. You should be able to pick up a replacement battery easily enough and from the sound of it, that may resolve the problem

Utter bollox. Had 3 PCs in my lifetime.. each I changed to upgrade. None broke. If you teach yourself the basic cleaning of your pc then it should last a while. As for getting stuff back due to fooked HD.. try blaming the user for not backing up instead. No HD should last.. whether in a fricken Mac or Windows PC.

Wow why didn't i think of that...... so can you explain to me how cleaning the 2 laptops that overheated might have stopped the issues happening, just in case i ever have the misfortune of ever owning a Windows one again? Put the vac to the fan? Ensure **** goes in sock not on screen? Wipe keyboard with baby wipes as soon as takeaway spills? hmmmm not sure any of those things would have fixed the issues with the graphics card and motherboard that were known issues with those models but i'm guessing your genius is going to tell me otherwise.

As for only owning 3 pc's, in my business (which by the way is technical) i've probably purchased over 100 pc's for my company or for clients so i guess i can speak from some experience of frustrations and issues with pc's. I'm also fully aware that data should be backed up, unfortunately we don't back data up every minute of the day do we or maybe you do, care to share how that works whilst out on client sites with no wifi or network access? Sadly both of my laptops died whilst just that, out on site at clients offices, which as well as being embarrassing/frustrating also meant i lost valuable data at the time. I'm sure that might happen with a Mac also, but you know what, if it does i'll be annoyed and frustrated, but then i'll probably thick wow thats the first issue i've had while i go and pick up my shiny new replacement on applecare.

Oh and finally i think you'll find if you google Dell laptops overheating you'll find hundreds of pages on forums with known issues of Dell's overheating and frustrating in a lot of cases just outside of warranty periods, people hate Dell laptops for the simple reason they're unreliable and their support is garbage. In fact if you google people being ****ed off with pc's and moving to macs and vowing never to go back you'll be inundated with responses......your pc will probably overheat...... hey make sure you clean it before you do eh, that should stop that happening.

You should write a white paper on how you've managed to keep your 3 pc's in your lifetime free from bloatware, viruses, slowdown, issues of any sort, you'll be hailed as some sort of genius ...... Actually add a section in there about all the Mac's that you've owned and how they compare to pc's while you're at it.

Now if you can help with with an iPhone 4s that is sat in restore state after updating firmware and when connected to iTunes to restore comes back with an error 2001 then i really will think you're a genius ...... maybe i should have cleaned it before i did the update eh. :-k

If it works with the battery taken out and plugged in it could be the CMOS battery needs replacing.

Well that'll teach you for getting suckered into buying something just cos they sponsor Spurs ;)

Don't know what AIA is but I'll undoubtedly buy one :(

AIA do insurance, in Asia though I think.

Have you got over the years of binge drinking Holsten Pils yet?

I don't think Superhudd is talking about that type of cleaning.

Why do you keep purchasing 100 pc's for you company/clients when they are crap?

And as for finding 100's of pages of people moaning about Dell, well lets face it people like to moan and the last time i looked the internet was at least very big, so probably even bigger now ;)

Why is he banging on about Dell anyway. He is a funny one.

Well, If you shop at the Aldi of computers then someone in your IT department should be sacked. Cannot believe you admit to buying computers on mass from Dell.

There is no difference between a well builtcomputer, whether it laptop, PC or Mac. What is different are the people that use them and look after them and the big brand names that use cheap **** within to boost profit margins and use advertising to bring the gullible in.

But like I said whether it Mac, PC or Laptop, they all break. One is not better than the other, which I think you agreed with me before you started wagging your **** about some aftercare ****e.

Incidently I still use my Samsung Galaxy S2... not had a problem or had a need to upgrade. Sounds like you need to call your aftercare though for your precious Iphone. ;)

Where did i say i bought en masse from Dell????? I guess buying 2 Dells to you is buying en mass seeing as you've owned a whopping 3 pc's. Both Dells at the time were rated top in reviews.

As for your statement about there being no difference between a pc and a mac ...... one day you'll own a Mac and realise how ridiculous that comment was. I don't agree in any way about them being equal, Macs are far superior, they just are and i'm not a fanboy i just want the best kit for what i do.

I actually have never owned an iPhone, both my kids have them, Android for me HTC, had the S2 and loved it.
