Great Lilywhite Hopes (aka The Amazing Blondel)

Roland Beurre

As has been pointed out in another thread, very few prospects (i.e. young promising players) let go by THFC have gone on to what might be termed better things.

We've had lots of people we let go who have had decent careers but very few who went on to be world-beaters; the only one I can think of is Graeme Souness, who should have been our new Dave Mackay.

Older fans might remember Keith Weller who did well at Millwall, Chelsea and Leicester (?), or Bowen and Culverhouse, the full-backs in that Norwich team that, hard though it is to believe, challenged for the title. They probably would've made it in the THFC teams of the day but that might say more about the quality of the THFC teams at the time.

Mostly, though, it has been a succession of players who have found their level, with that level being on a par with Tottenham or a step or two below it.

In my time on Glory-Glory, I can recall strong cases ("give him a chance") being made for Jonathan Blundell, Adel Taarabt, Lewis Holtby, Kevin Prince Boateng and Marcus Edwards, to name but five.

I myself regretted the release of Alex Pritchard, John Moncur and Tom Carroll and yet none of these subsequently pulled up any trees (I might still have Pritchard on the bench as a specialist free-kick taker - well, we've got five subs per game allowed now so I can see this sort of thing happening).

So, finally getting to the point, who is your "might have been (but in fact probably would not have been)" player?

(Apologies if this has already been covered in a thread before; it was prompted by seeing a mention of Marcus Edwards).

Apparently Gerard McMahon was going to be the next Ryan Giggs

He once scored a worldie for Northern Ireland I think it was (Can't rememebr if it was the Mens or u21 though). Chested a cross, knee'd it up and and did an overhead kick. I remember him being talked about a lot at the time. I've tried to look online for that goal a few times but never did find it.

Think this is it,

Bentaleb, for a brief period he looked a great prospect, but kept making the same mistakes, seen a few that never made the first team Mark Gower looked a second Hoddle at youth level but never got a game before playing for 5 or 6 British clubs.

Ally dingdong. was at one time our youngest player to turn out for us. Came on as sub against Anderlecht when we won the cup but got injured (knee ligaments i think) and he never really recovered from it.

Paul mcveigh, musa yahaya, Alex Olsen, Scott houghton, Paul moran, David Tuttle, John hendry, milos veljkovic a few more

Yannick Kamanan always saw his name on the score sheet for the youth team, didn’t he have a ridiculous record at youth level?

Souleymane Coulibaly What was the old European youth cup they entered? Was an Elite tournament. I remember him ripping it up, pretty sure it was him and Pritchard who were the stand outs.

Edit - It was the Nextgen series.

He was ridiculous and the hype that followed d

John Bostock did nothing - caused a stink with the move from Palace having payed for their first team as a 15 year old.

Coulibaly will prob ably have a video of 10 fantastic goals as he would always shoot and never pass, one of the dumbest players I've seen but he was in a team of very good players.
