Ready for a challenge?

My dad still uses a windows 98 pc. It's a massive piece of crap. We got him a new laptop for his birthday almost a year ago and he's not using it very much.

How can I get his files, including outlook e-mails etc etc from the windows 98 pc to his new laptop- considering;

-The DVD drive on the windows 98 machine is dead so I can't burn it.
-My external hard drive isn't compatible with win98
-my external dvd player/burner isn't compatible
-can't seem to get services like google drive working on win98

I'm thinking turn the win98 machine into an ftp server.. Am I understanding what an ftp server is?

You'd be far better off using the new one as an FTP server and uploading from 98.

Filezilla will give you a free FTP server/client, but uninstall when you're done - that's not a port you want left open.

Thanks Scara,

to go the ftp route the router won't need to be connected to the internet, right? So I can unplug the internet lead throughout the duration of filesharing?

Can you not just share the 98 machine entirely and then just browse it on the newer one, if they are on the same network?

On the new machine just go to Win Explorer and type in \\win98name\c$ for root access to the disk

Sheesh, from memory lol, I think you have to go to the network and make sure that file/print sharing is enabled/installed - most probs a reboot after lol, gotta luv 98.

If there is only C: then you can just share that by right-clicking and allowing everyone to see/use it.

The $ symbol after the drive letter in the share is demanding admin(root) access so you do not need to just share a folder, just the disk.

I'll check on google, my mothballed 486 dx50 is in UK and been a while since use :D
See how this get's you along, basic principal to setup the share on the old 98 machine.

Or maybe better. here.

IIRC file and printer sharing isn't installed by default on 98. That means that unless it's an OEM install with a full i386 folder he probably won't be able to install it.

If it's 98SE then it probably has it on.

Are both computers connected to the same router? If so you don't need connection to the internet.

Worst case scenario, let me know and I'll open up an FTP port on the server for you.

Legend! thank you! will look at it all later. I think it's windows 98SE so I might be in luck! If not will try the FTP route..

They are both on the same router, so I can unplug the internet while I'm messing around with all the settings. Thanks Scara!, hopefully won't need to take you up on your offer.

I've never managed to get anything like a USB key or portable drive work with the windows 98 machine..

Got a new problem now, upgraded our wifi to virgin's superhub the other day and all the computers/gadgets in the house except my mum's will connect to it. She's being proper annoying, keeps asking me to fix it as if I haven't spent more than an hour sitting at her computer going through the settings, as if I haven't been reading up trying to work out what's going on..

So I know it's to do with the WPA2 encryption. Vista apparently has problems with this.. Do you think if I order a cheapo external usb wifi dongle thing it would be able to connect through that?

[Edit]Meh, ordered a dongle for ~£3.. thinking she'll stop moaning if I tell her that I can't do anything until it arrives. If it doesn't work I might try and upgrade her machine to Windows 7 if that's still available someplace.

I think there was a vital upgrade in USB between win98 and win98se (I forget what). I have an old win98 machine where I had problems using USB sticks and other USB devices.

It's interesting to look back and realise a cheap USB stick today can be bigger than the hard-drive on those old machines.

There's something on Vista that requires changing the encryption one way and then back again, I can't remember off the top of my head though. It's a real bitch that one.

BOOM.

I couldn't quite get my head round ftp servers etc, I tried trixster's method but it asked me for the win98 CD as I was setting it up and fook knows where that is.

Thinking outside the box I've got soulseek installed on both computers and I'm sending all the files through that. Seems to be working.

Using soulseek to transfer files across took forever but I'm all done now. This windows 98 machine has been the family computer for years so I'm slightly disappointed I didn't find more of my old ****.. must have hidden it really well. I understand port forwarding a lot more now so I think that's why I couldn't get the ftp working.

£3 USB dongle worked a treat for Vista, was set up and working within about 5 minutes.

I'm re-watching the X-Files at the moment and the 1998 X-files game is installed on the old machine too so I'm moving it upstairs for a week or two while I indulge..

Thanks again for help and suggestions everybody =D>
