Clean sheets

P.D.

Paul Stalteri
Brad Friedel's 14 clean sheets in the Premier League last season represents a 25-year best in league action.

The goalkeeper took the tally to 14 in the last match of the campaign with a number of fine saves to deny Fulham and secure a 2-0 win at the Lane.

We've had a number of seasons with 13 clean sheets in recent years - including 2004-05, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2009-10 - but Brad's 14 was last bettered in 1986-87, when Ray Clemence kept 19 clean sheets in league action.

That was the season where the team flourished under David Pleat's new playing system of 4-5-1 with Clive Allen grabbing 49 goals.

We finished third in the old Division One, lost in the final of the FA Cup and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Looking back through our history to when we first played in the Football League in 1908-09, 14 clean sheets has only been bettered on nine occasions, including 16 in that first campaign in the old Division Two in 1908-09.

The record is 21 clean sheets in 1970-71 with the great Pat Jennings in goal.

Saw this on the OS. We let in 41 goals therefore in 24 games, an average of 1.71 goals conceded for those games. Thats fairly high however if you discount the manc games and scum away which saw us concede 19 goals then we let in 22 goals in 19 games or 1.15 goals per game.

Thats actually fairly tight at the back despite our defence changing most weeks, look forward to a settled back 4.

Friedel has turned out to be an awesome signing - im happy for him to remain no.1 for as long as he feels he's up to the job

'Typical backwards Harry signing, only ever seen him on Match of the Day and he'll be finished in a year'

Well done Brad. All you want is for a 'keeper to be reliable and communicative - and that's just what he is.

Got to be careful and ensure we have a proper long term strategy in place though, players at that age can deterioate quickly.

Other then his distribution he has been solid. Someone we've needed for years, reliable and consistent.

No such thing in football. Even less so with the introduction of transfer windows. One season at a time is what it's all about now.
