Child proofing a house

Wriggly

Girlfriend has moved in and her 3 year old daughter. As much as she is adorable, I would like to install electric shock wires all around the home so she stops either unscrewing the chest of drawer handles, pulling the curtain tastles, turning light switches on or opening up every cupboard in the kitchen and helping herself etc. I dont think electric shock treatment is allowed, which is a shame as she is doing my head in... Can anyone else think of suitable ways of child proofing things ?

As much as that response is funny, it really is driving me up the wall. In the interim I'm taking the light bulbs out of the light switches she is partial to turning on and off. Would still like some sort of light switch guard but cant see anything on google.

How tall is she at three to be able to reach light switches?!

There are lots of easy to install catches for kitchen cupboards and drawers. We put them on all our kitchen cabinets and drawers that were within Miss funster's reach. Cheap too. A few quid for a pack of four. They vary in design so you'll need to be a little bit careful they for your variety.

Other than that, she'll lose interest after a while and find something else to interest herself.

She can reach them no problem, little arm reaches up and voila. The one on the stairs is of course much easier. The catches for kitchen cupboards is a good idea, I'll look into getting some of those.

Are you after a way to make it impossible for her to do it ? Or after techniques to make her realise doing certain things are naughty ?

If it is the latter, only you will know the answer as it will be down to you to understand what the child responds to (dont use the naughty step, its for chavs in council estates).

If you want to make it impossible for her to do something, probably only way to do it is lock things or make it too high for her to reach. If you cant do that you have to go for the above option.

Failing all the responsible replies, ducktape or bungie straps - guaranteed to keep her where you want her ;)

what about putting something underneath the light switches so they can only be accessed by someone taller?

You could put a table or something she can't climb on under it so she can't reach over or put a little shelf under each switch that would be in her way but not in yours.

Thanks for the replies, got quite a few ideas now. Should be able to make things more safe and less annoying for me. :)
