BT Broadband v SKY Broadband?

Fibre optic broadband has finally come to my area so I can upgrade from my 2MB line that I'm currently on with Virgin. Unfortunately Virgin can't provide fibre optic in my area yet, which is a shame as I've always been very happy with them. There are other providers who can give me fibre optic, like Talk Talk, but I wouldn't trust them so I will have to switch providers to either BT or Sky. The packages are very similar, Sky is cheaper but with BT you get BT Sport thrown in. My real concern is Sky's customer service is epically ****e, and I do kind of object to givig them more of my money. I haven't used BT though so I dont know if theirs is any better. Has anyone got any experience of BT and Sky and can provide any comparisons? Also does anyone know if either of them have reliability issues or are there any other problems I should be aware of with either of them?

BT can be absolutely useless with residential stuff, it took them 5 months to install a line for me in central london last year

if it works the service is great and very fast, you'll also get better speeds with BT as they prioritise their traffic over other providers (not that they'll admit this in public)

sky is generally fine but since they took over o2/Be the network has been strained in certain areas

i'd be tempted to wait for virgin cable if its imminent though, having used all 3 companies over the last few years thats the best service imo

I've just put in an order with BT for Infinity, my installation date is 3 weeks away. I'm currently with Be, and have been for a few years. Before the Sky takeover I was getting a lovely 16mb connection (up to 24 line), but now I'm lucky to get 8mb since it became Sky. BT Infinity will apparently give me 50-68mb, which is a tad exciting! Hopefully the installation wont be too painful as Galeforce mentioned, but I already have a BT phone line, they just need to go to my local green box thing and twiddle about in there

BT and Sky both use the openrach exchanges so the only difference would be free bt sport and the customer service. The broadband itself is the same.

I never used BT in the past as their customer service experience was second only to Sky in the **** stakes.

Now that they're pushing Infinity that department is much better.

BT sports is a no-brainer for me. Similar price for broadband, same service but stacks more great free football.

We moved before a year had passed on a new Sky phone/broadband contract. Was willing to pay off the last four months or so to get the BT sports, but I also wanted to take my phone number with me. Sky couldnt do that, and when I gave that as my reason for leaving they didnt charge a cancellation fee. I did keen Sky TV though.

I hate BT. I am moving all of my business lines away from them because their customer service is so poor and they blatantly lie to you.

I moved from a dedicated small provider that rates very very highly on review sites to BT 3 months ago. I have been shocked at the consent and reliable speed with BT. There home hub 4 is fantastic and on a line where i get 7mb we can stream 2 - 3 programs at once.

But the customer service is poo, it took me 3-4 months of trying to be able to sign up (confusion on whether it was a business line or not)

I have just started a new job in the telecoms industry, I have to ring BT on almost a daily basis. They're nice enough but I've learnt already that they rarely give you a straight answer, you ask them to ring you back, sometimes they do sometimes they don't.

The problem is that no matter who your supplier you end up on BT fibre at some point and if that goes wrong your ****ed because they don't move fast for anyone and won't tell their customers anything.

They've also restructured their entire system over the last 6 months, I used to be able to email my account manager direct with change requests and new orders, now I have to go through global services for everything, they don't have email or twitter so I know have to make a phone call for everything

It's 2014, there shouldn't be any need to have to actually talk to another human being for anything.

Thanks for all the feedback folks, I went with Sky in the end as they seem to have a better usage policy and were £100 cheaper over the course of the year, so I don't think the free BT sports is worth the £100 difference in price.

BT has always been ****, same as sky. If i ever move from Virgin T.V i will keep the broadband.

Does anyone on here work for Sky? I've lost all the Sky HD movie and sports channels because I only have the 'basic HD package" apparently. Is it really possible that they've only just realised that I've had ALL of the HD channels for 7 years or are they trying to pull a fast one?

Im having weirdness with Sky at mo, speedtest says 20mb

But it seems for past few days if i try and dl anything its stupidly slow like 100kbs, but if i start a 2nd dl its at full speed !!

Its proving to be a pain trying to stream footie too, very stuttery this afternoon
