British Lions beat Australia

In Rugby

Hope this is the start of a terrible sporting week for the Aussies with the Ashes starting on Wed...

It was a truly superb performance by the BL today. At the start of the second half thought they would fudge it up but they showed great determination and balls to win by a hefty marging too.

imagine how the Aussies would react if they lost a proper sport like that

on another note I don't know much about rugby but are the lions not a bit fantasy football, not really fair on Australia when the opposition can just pick players from different nations, bit like us losing a football match to a combined Argentinian and Brazilian squad

Face it your sport is in the bricker, i remember all the crap we used to get about not having proper english people in our teams, i look at your cricket team and rugby team and its full of players who werent born in oz, the fast tracking of a pakistani spinner being the latest one, smacks of desperation

I'm by no means a rugby lover but the Lions tour is something special. Comes round every twelve years and I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the second test in Melbourne.

First two games went down to the last kick of the game. Third was a whalloping but the Lions deserved it.

Such a major event and all it gets is a small article on page 17 of the sport section of the main Sunday broadsheet. Bad losers the Aussies despite all the practice they're getting in recent years.

Depends where you are Awesome. Rugby is played by only 2 states here and they are full of either rednecks or drug dealers. Coming from a more cultured and civilized part of the country I couldn't give 2 smelly bricks about the "Lions" or whatever you call your little team that's not really a team.

Mary - you're overblowing the fast tracking of the Pakistani. It's a lovely little story that's getting a lot of press in the UK because it's what your press do, but rest assured over here, no one has heard of him.

I think you underestimate it Superted , record crowds over qld, vic and nsw , sell out in Perth for a "friendly" plus a money spinner for he ARU in Hong Kong first.

Just got back from Sydney, immense atmosphere, cracking game but brick stadium.

By the way the fast tracking of the Pakistani is making enough news here, about as much as the Warner debacle.

Maybe it's an Eastern seaboard thing but I've not once seen a story about the Ashes where his name is legitimately brought up. As I said its a nice story but the truth is somewhat different to how it's being reported. If you believe the press, Cricket Australia have lobbied the government to change the immigration act just so this guy can play in the Ashes. From what I understand, it was more the good work of team mates and associates from Melbourne Uni and it was more to make sure he wasn't sent home and shot. Truth is, he could play in the Ashes but he's not been picked, even when the opportunity opened up for some late replacements.

Victorians will sell out a tiddly winks tournament if the national team was playing. It's a novelty, I'll admit that, but I don't see anyone upset that we lost like we do for proper rugby against proper teams like the springboks or all blacks or England, wales, etc on their own merits.

You might be right, I couldn't really care less about who the Aussies pick, if its within the prevailing rules then so be it.

The history of the lions is what captures the British and Irish. Remember for decades they could not compete successfully as individual nations so the lions model was a chance for the fans to experience the game in the Southern Hemisphere with a chance of seeing some quality competition. Also remember it is a way to bring disparate nations together with a common focus which was desperately needed in the political and social climate at the time.

Now it is a bloody great spectacle and one of the biggest tourist attractions Australia ever sees, it outweighs the ashes by more than 70% for revenue throughout Australia. There were at least 30,000 travelling lions fans over the past month and it was a fantastic series.

The tradition of the Lions is what makes it so great.

Re: the 'fantasy football' aspect, that might partly be true but in general the Southern Hemisphere teams are much better so makes for a more even series

You will hear his name a lot this summer when KP hits him all over the park in every test !!!

Warne and Border both said they didnt know why he was fast tracked as he isnt even that good

I enjoy a game of rugby but I cannot see the appeal of the "lions". The name makes me cringe and several of the component nations would tour just as well.

Wales haven't beaten the Aussies for 6 years under their own banner, the lions seem to exist to help them out of their feeble mindset.

Even the jocks ran the springboks close in one test recently.
