4 year Cycle?

WhoopWhoop

Anyone think we'll see this summer like what we did in summer 2004 and 2008 as regards transfers? letting lots of players go and bringing just as many in? 2008 was more down to players wanting out(berbatov keane)but also kaboul malbranque tainio sold but 2004 saw quite a few players come to end of contract anderton poyet Keller? Davies sold sure some more were. Remember first few games of season 2004 quite excited as had high hopes for likes of pamarot atouba edman mendes davis carrick ziegler naybet didnt know half of them tbh. What everyone think summer to be big ins and outs?

I think when you try not to buy/sell a great deal year on year then inevitably there comes a summer when you need a major shake up. Every 4/5 years is probably about right

yeah suppose those two summers were also the first transfer for two new managers in santini/arnesen and ramos? wonder who gets to splash the cash this summer?(please not another whos next manager? thread)

Well we'd have to in fact seeing the amount of deadwood and old players we currently have and having let go a lot of our younger, hungrier players such as Corluka and Bassong. A lot of them having been accumulated during Redknapps reign.

With a new manager, there will be turnover. Add in the fact that a lot of Harry's purchases were made with short term goals in mind, it may be a major summer.

Not sure it's a cycle, it can almost be seen as progress, pre FA/Jol we were just a brick mediocre team that needed a mass overhaul, we then became a best of the rest, top 6 team. The second rebuild was to get us to a CL challenger, next rebuild should be to make us more CL regulars.

But the cost/size of the rebuild depends heavily on do we have to replace the players we want/need to go only, or do we have to replace players that we consider core (Bale/Modric/Lennon).

Too many new signings is rarely a good thing. Even if they're all good players, it takes time for the team to gel, for any foreigners to learn the language and develop team spirit, and to find a tactical system that suits the new squad. Look at Arsenal this season, they finally look like they've got some balance to the side but they were absolute brick in the first half of the season as they hadn't figured out the most effective way to use them all. Same with City, they spunked loads of money every transfer window since the Sheik arrived before slowing down a little this season (still spent loads though) and actually putting in a title challenge.

Having said that, we need to make at least 4/5 new signings this summer. At least one CB, at least one winger, at least two strikers. Would be good to get a long term goalkeeping option too.

There's a lot of similarities with summer 2004, I've already been thinking that.

We need a new management stucture, to get rid of a lot of 30+ players (Cudicini, King, Gallas, Nelson, Defoe and Saha) and introduce a whole new (better) culture to the club.

Bring on Frankie and Jacques mark 2.

Its about time we turfed out all our good players, brought in some mediocre ones and an unproven manager. We haven't had a mid-table "transition season" for a while...
