James Maddison

I think a leadership group is a good thing. If you have clicks in the dressing room which most do due to players from the same country, age etc. It makes sense to have the “ring leader” of each group on side within a leadership group. Could potentially stop certain groups in the dressing room rebelling and avoids a toxic environment.

I don’t think James is consistent enough to be demanding more from other players on the pitch. Plus I don’t think he has the strength mentally to dominate a set of players. Some captains lead by example but he is so streaky.

Not good enough for me I’m afraid. Says all the right things but really doesn’t have all the substance to back it.
Some players step up when given the captaincy, and feel Madders will be one of those.
Him and Kulu would be the top two choices for it, but with question marks over Kulus fitness etc then Madders is the best choice.

Helps when the captain has a history of missing around a third of the season through injury or suspension - Romero for the past season and if as expected Maddison is announced his career has shown around 10-15 games a season missed through injury

Give it to Tonali, give it to a world class player who sets an example. James Maddison is all huff says the right things and probably a likeable softie. We need someone who can get a foot in g the lads up and not be injured most of the time or go on streak

Maybe in a year's time. Very difficult to come in and straight away get the responsibility that a captain has...imagine if he has a terrble first few months?

Rightly or wrongly he’s an established prem player brought on for massive wages and a transfer fee … I would be confident that he will hit the ground running. Especially with a long preseason under his belt. I’m optimistic about Spurs … it’s been a while

I'd rather this 'leadership group' thing disappears. I don't know where it came from, but it's completely unnecessary - if you want to be a leader then lead, you don't need to join some official club....
i think it useful for coaches who prefer to just meet with group leaders instead of direct communications with their players e,g, ange and TF.

personally i prefer head coaches who get on the pitch to scrutinize player performacne e.g. poch, mourinho, conte and dezerbi. however being more personal they also have their weakneses due to being more emotionally engaged.

He's a good player but that doesn't mean he's captain material. Not saying he isn't but I don't know near enough about his personality and how he fits in with the squad to even mention him as captain. If any of the new signings were to be in the frame for captain I'd be leaning more towards Robertson.

I think he is a cohesive and encouraging personality behind the scenes. That doesn't equate to being a likeable softie.

The only aspect of the captain’s role we see on the pitch, but there’s a lot more to it. How they conduct themselves around the training ground, interactions with staff, media duties, extra work for the club in the community etc. There are standards that need to be set so others can follow. I wouldn’t be surprised if Robertson is in the leadership group this season.

I’m not Maddison’s biggest fan but he is clearly well liked within the club and think he has the personality to fully take on the role. I just don’t think he’ll be the player he was and not sure how much he will play

He has had off-pitch demons though. He served a 10-month ban for conduct reasons remember. Not that I don't appreciate that addiction is complicated

But Robertson makes no sense as captain. You want a captain that’s regularly starting for us. Robertson isn’t our first choice left back.

I agree with the second part of your post but not necessarily with the third. I have a suspicion that Robertson will be our first choice full back this season.
