Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

I know people talk about lack of balance on here between reform and say..........Labour (ironically this post comes under a negative on them)

But given these types of stories, surely there is good reason at times. Its not anyone on this forums fault that these idiots keep making the news

I totally understand and support the other parties not pandering to Farage’s election whim. But the trouble is there’s no counter to the Reform rhetoric. He was always going to win anyway but it will be interesting to see the turnout and the % vote he gets.

I’m still holding out hope that the independents get some votes, Restore being there might even split that vote somewhat (the obvious downside being that s**t stain of humanity Laurence Fox would require votes) and we can push binface over the line.

Long term doesn’t matter for bow locally, let’s make Farage lose to a bin and end his career.
 
Talk Burnham is likely to reverse some of RR damage on tax and also look at a hospitality relief. Would be good and obvious PR if he does.

I think as well meaning as his "ending homelessness" is, I think its massively hard given the complexity of why people on the street. Would take total social care reform which would take 20/30 years to see the changes along with everything else thats needed.

I think Burnham looks to be a politician that can handle the communication and storytelling required of anyone that might have a chance of surviving the shark pool.
And his callobrative/consensus politics mantra is a noble grown up aim.

And to that end I was happy to see how he goes...

However 2 concerns straight out the gate..1. Fresh drilling for oil and gas, not sure how he squares this with Ed Millibands drive for eco power. Plus I'm hoping it's not a 'bend over' for Trump, as that's exactly pretty much all Trump has said regarding Burnham becoming PM.

2. He wants to abolish the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. WTF. If his head is not in that game, he has a massive blind spot. (A worry first floated a couple of weeks back on the rest is politics)

I like some of his ideas...but they're classic old labour ideas, which is fine as they counteract some of the neoliberal failures of the last 40 years BUT you need to mix the old with the new, otherwise you're just baking the same cake. Always looking to refine and improve is imperative.

Devil will be in the detail there, I read its not expanding the drilling or issuing new licences, its speeding up existing, which for the benefit of policy, its no difference to what came before if true. Not sure if that was accurate but was def in the report I read a week ago

Again Devil in the detail will come down the line, I read the initial news on this and it was massively unclear if that was his plan or not.

As with all, time will tell, its his first day in the door

I think he’s taking a fair amount of inspiration firm Mandani, in that signals and visual cues can tell a story. As well as easier ‘quick wins’ that in reality don’t make a huge amount of difference to people’s lives (because the bigger structural things take years to solve) but do help people feel like their political leader is at least delivering something. Starmer just didn’t seem concerned with empty gestures and I admired that about him, but it does seem like already Burnham is intentional about how he tells his story.

I liked the no lectern thing as an example. No notes for the speech. Just makes him look a bit different. More relatable. Less separated, less rehearsed. Ultimately it’s a completely meaningless thing but I think these little touches will steer him well.

From a comms perspective Labour have basically been playing with the handbrake on under Starmer. And I really liked Starmer…didn’t care one jot about comms so long as I could see him making the right long term decisions. But I think Burnham is going to be more popular with better comms and more relatability.

I also think he is being very clever with cross party slight of hand in PR, the rolling back of the digital ID (I am a fan of the idea from a logistical point) gains some silence from the Right as do a couple of other "think of" moments like the rise of tax free allowance that I have noticed have kept the baying for hid blood down for the moment.

Like any politician he should be judged on his results but unfortunately the PR side is something that is important in this modern age of politics.
 
Politics has become so black and white and so ‘is and them’ wouldn’t it be nice if just for a while we had a PM where regardless of ‘left leaning’ ‘right leaning’ we just got a period of time where basically everyone agreed the person was ok and doing a decent, fair job.

When was the last time we actually had a pretty universally liked PM?

I saw a GB News panelist who said "we dont care who replaces Starmer, we will give them the exact same". Thats not politics.
