Savinho

We could string this out and probably get a deal done on September 1st for £50M. Same as JPVH we could have shaved 20% of the fee by waiting. That's what Levy would have done and we end up missing out one of them as its left to late. Or there is an injury at City/Brighton which means they cannot sell or a rival clubs main target falls through and they move on to their 2nd choice which is Savinho or JPVH.

So yes you potentially save £25M by waiting. But you also put getting your key targets at risk and you do not have them for an extended period during pre season. How much more of an effective player would Xavi Simons have been if he has signed on July 15?

It’s 100% worth the extra paid to get them in early for pre-season. Be part of the squad, learn the tactics, learn team mates and be ready for the season ahead.

That’s not even scratching the surface of it, what if at the end of the season we qualify for the Europa but we’re 2 points off champions league and getting the players in early got us those 2 points in August, but that’s also to simplistic, lets say we save x amount by doing what Levy did but the team takes until October/November to gel as they had no pre season to integrate, we finish the season 7/8th but can console our self’s by saying if the season started in October/November we would have finished 4th, we are in the league cup from the middle of August, what if not having the signings in means we go out in the 2nd round whereas having them in means we go on and win it, and then factor in the AIA deal ends this season, if we are sat in 3/4th it’s puts the club in a stronger negotiating position than being sat in 6/7th, the premium paid for getting players in early, integrated into the squad and tactical setups can absolutely pay for itself come the end of a season.

100%

The 2011/12 season we lost the opening 2 games of the season. Levy finally gets Adeybeyor & Parker over the line that we had been negotiating all summer. We finish 1pt behind Arsenal and missing out on UCL.

Definately. Weve spent years and multiple windows getting last minute deals done under Levy. Then those players arent even ready to play the first game of the season, or next game after the Jan window closes. Plus they take a month to get up to speed and know their role, gel with team mates etc.
Get the deals done early, as we have done so far, and the benefits are huge.

Why do players do this? It's so dumb.

Short termism

Zaha screwed his career doing it.
They don't do that; their agents tell them it's a good idea. Apparently, Zaha sued his agent. When you're a big fish in a small pond and the rest of your agent's clients have a lower profile, signing a new and improved contract means a good payoff. You get a lot of money now, not maybe, not later. Saw an interview with Oscar not long ago where he talked about his move to China, and he said he could break his leg the next week and kiss his career goodbye.

Stakes are different for players, agents and managers. Let's take Kulusevski for instance. If he never plays again we, as fan, will turn our focus back on who will replace him. For him, it's a different story: if he never plays again, it's the end of his professional life. Sure, he's earned more than most of us will in a lifetime, but I don't think it's all about money for them. It's also about routine, socialising, having a purpose.

In Zaha's case, it turned out to be a poor move, but sometimes, you need certainty in life and most people would tell you that a new contract won't prevent a club that really wants you to get you.

Is he really all that good? His Girona highlight reel is great, but has he done anything of note in the PL? I’m not convinced he’s worth 60mill. But as always, it’s not my money.

Hope he proves me wrong but i think he's done nothing at City other than look absolutely terrible.

Yes yes i know Girona and Pep yadda yadda
