World Cup 2026: Mexico, USA and Canada

How Messi didn't get sent off for the studs-on-the-calf challenge in their first game, one cannot explain.
Plus, Embolo: was his 'move' any different to any typical South American in most of the games, especially Argentinians? I'm sure i saw at least one similar theatrical fall like that against Cape Verde where the Cape Verde got a yellow card for it and NO VAR review at all...go figure.

Just looking at the (in)consistencies with how Argentinian matches are refereed and VAR'd is ample to get "conspiracy theories" started
There is a video on SM that shows all the challenges that Egypt made that didn't result in even a foul let alone a card so it literally does go both ways. You probably haven't seen that video and so your narrative already set, but if had watched that video and nothing else you would think that Argentina got cheated in that match.

Embolo got sent off because it 1. Because it was a clear dive and c'mon you can be the most biased person on the planet but you can see the Argentine player doesn't even touch him and he threw himself to the floor before the supposed touch and rolled over and over. He tried to get the Argentine players a yellow which leads into 2. The new directive whereby if a yellow is rescinded for simulation the simulated player will receive the punishment (a good rule) and before you say it yes this same rule was used in an earlier match for the same situation in this very world cup.

The conspiracies started because there is a concerted anti Messi group, basically CR7 fans who have for years ran a social media campaign attacking Messi and anything games he's involved in, questioning his stats, performances, claims of cheating, drugs, bias etc, etc, etc. it's just grown year after year. This isn't a new thing there's actually a media company being paid to insert stories, that's how crazy the competition between these 2 modern greats has actually become. I'm aware of it because a friend of mine is one of the CR7 crazies and has for years been sending some variation of these conspiracies.

Argentina haven’t got any more decisions in their favour than any other big nation as far as I can remember. Even France got the brunt of an awful refereeing performance against Paraguay and they are one of the favourites! The CR7 stuff is genuinely amusing. I can’t stand Ronaldo but I can admit he’s an incredible footballer. I just think Messi is better and has had the better career overall. Claiming there’s a conspiracy is just nonsense. What about the hundreds of great goals and assists he’s provided over the years! Piers Morgan is still adamant Ronaldo is the better player but I imagine he’s just worried he won’t get another interview out of him if he says Messi is the GOAT.

100% the bigger and better sides typically get the decisions moreso than the smaller teams/nations.

Personally I don't think he should have been sent off so the decision was correct. Balaogun also shouldn't have been sent off for the same thing, it's not an intentional challenge so how you going send someone off for putting their foot down and accidentally catching the other player.

It's about consistency; i mean have ANY of the sendings off really been 'intentional' after all? Was Quansah's 'intentional' or just reckless?

Putting your foot down and catching someone's ankle and going in on a sliding challenge or different things. One is the attempt to play the ball and getting it wrong, the intent was not to foul but the challenge was intentional, he got it wrong so there is a punishment. Running and putting your foot down is not an intentional challenge, its not even a challenge its just unluckily catching the other player. I said the same when Simmons was sent off against Liverpool for similar, it wasn't even a challenge just a clumsy coming together.

Why are you running into another players space if you are not trying to get the ball?

Running towards, maybe pressuring, maybe lining up for an interception. In all three examples no actual challenge was attempted, all three involve a player accidentally catching another's leg while moving. if it is an intentional challange then I can get some of the argument (but still disagree) but these weren't that.

I think if you are attempting to influence the game, in any way, you are responsible for any contact that happens.

If Balogun/Messi had been the one stamped on I’m sure the US/Argentina would have wanted a foul and a booking.

If Quansah had a Mexican boot go studs up just below his knee we’d all have been screaming for a red card.

If Balogun/Messi had been stamped on I personally wouldn't think it was a foul just I currently don't.

Likewise I would think what I do about the Quansah situation regardless. I'm not really swayed by the emotional side of these things when it comes to decisions. You'll see me often saying something wasn't a foul or a pen when the majority of the match thread is baying for it, because well, I simply dont agree even if its in my team's favour.

I don't want decisions made to suit my interests, I just want the correct decicions made.

I think most people agree with your last sentence. I like many thought VAR would help with that, but it's just bought more confusion. I know I've lost track of what exact criteria bring a review into play. Unless you're watching on TV you don't know if certain incidents have been reviewed (I have mute on and only found this happened in this competition) and why there is no explanation.

Fair enough.

I think first and foremost you make sure you don’t hurt anyone, if you put your studs into someone you’ve not been careful enough and should be booked.
