Conor Gallagher

Well, beyond the player's perspective .. literally wtf was the club doing?

If he is saying the truth, the club was in a death spiral under Frank and the one senior player we bought in January, Frank didn't rate/want?

fudging hell, not only did we "not panic buy" we fudging bought a player the manager didn't want, how the fudge is Lange still here?

Pretty sure he means Tudor: https://thfcdb.com/people/conor-gal...ate_desc&selectedView=default&manager=2545292

He started all 5 matches under Frank

I keep seeing people writing him off as just a squad player. I really think folks are going to be surprised by just how much he plays next season - and by where he plays.

Because he's not going to play as a deep-lying midfielder - he's a No.10 by trade, and it's where he'll play, imo.

Gallagher suffers from the same issue Anthony Gordon runs into - neither fit the conventional definition of a valuable player, and so people are quick to write them off while ignoring the one attribute that makes them very valuable in the modern game.

There's a reason Hansi Flick made Barca pay 85m for Gordon, and it's the same reason we pay Gallagher 200k a week - they are elite-level pressers. They lead the press from the front, their tempo setting the tone for the rest of the side - and they have the stamina, strength and pace to keep it up for 90 minutes straight.

Pressing is now the sine qua non of the modern game, and players good at pressing are valuable. Managers and clubs see this, even if fans don't, yet.

Everything I see with our squad building tells me we're setting up to operate in a way where our creativity comes from deeper, from the #6 and #8, and from the wings - while Gallagher will largely lead the press and make late runs into the box from the 10 slot, which was part of what made his breakout season at Palace so successful.

It's just my hunch - but it's one I think stands a decent chance of happening.

I agree.

I think the old adage of a #10 as the creative central outlet is outdated and has been nullified by modern defensive tactics. The new tactical revolution will hopefully open the pitch up and rely less on trying to penetrate a 12-yard zone in front of the back four.

I think RDZ is one of the most tactically astute and brave coaches who could very well be at the forefront of this change and using a player like Gallagher (and Solanke who we bought for his pressing) could well prove to be instrumental. Essentially you’re swapping the field position and responsibilities of the DM and the #10.

I’m bored af of the modern 4-2-3-1 and cannot wait for some variations to open the game up again.

It does seem that way, until you watch Olise playing 10 for France and curse the day that Spurs stopped being the obvious club for this type of player. The problem with Gallagher (not in any way dismissing his strengths) is his first touch - an issue Bergvall also has - and his inability to see a pass. Players who can do it all are obviously extremely rare. Yes, the 6 and 8 have to be able to pass, but it helps if your 10 can too. Maybe Xavi will improve his pressing. Like you I am desperate for football to swing back in a more expansive direction.

Shhhhhh - otherwise you might jolt @Gutter Boy out of his "Gallagher is no good" obsession :tearsofjoy:

Like we were the obvious club for Waddle, Ginola and Lennon in the past? And what did we win in that time? A pitiful league cup... I don't curse that we don't have a Ginola any more; I curse that we don't have a balanced stratospheric midfield of Wanyama, Dembele and Eriksen - no flash, all effectiveness... because ultimately it is the midfield that wins you games consistently.... not a flashy winger

He's absolutely fine as a defensive option to smother games when we are protecting a narrow lead. The Lamela role.

But in a possession team, like we are hopefully going to be, he's a player where momentum and possession goes to die.

We are not aiming to be a possession style team... ala Barca. RDZ focuses on a high press and deep playmaking from the centre halves and midfield pivots.. hence our recent purchases.

We're still going to be significantly blunter and more laborious as a side with him in the 10 than any of Simons, Kulu or Maddison

You could even do this

Kinsky
Porro JPVH VDV Udogie
Fernandes Tonali
Deki Gallagher Maddison
Kroupi

The physicality, fluidity and running of that lineup would be crazy

I'm not categorising Olise as "a flashy winger". If you are, that's an interesting take. As for the inclusion of Waddle in that list, I suspect you didn't see his last season and a half at Spurs, when he was probably one of Europe's best five attacking players. And, again, not a flashy winger. I'm saying that we are traditionally a club with a Hoddle, Waddle, Bale, Gascoigne... a truly creative player as the heart of our team and the focal point for our fans and our playing identity. That's what I miss, as, I suspect do much of our support. It's why I get disproportionately excited when I see what LWB does in the youth teams.

We won less your preferred midfield than we did with the likes of Waddle, Ginola and Lennon.
