*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur FC v Brentford FC ***

It was just night and day compared to what we’ve seen recently.
I don’t know what was behind it but we were confident in attack, fluid in passing, had more movement up front (though that still needs work).
Admittedly it’s a bit of a low bar in terms of comparisons with previous performances but there were certainly many more “up out of seat” instances today.
Still need to do it against a good team though. But very promising.
I wonder how much of impact Brentford playing Wednesday had vs us playing Tuesday
They won’t have oaky midweek and Saturday most of the season
Forest play away Thursday in Holland and we play Tuesday so have that advantage again next weekend

I'm absolutely going to get excited. I've listened to a lot of negativity about Frank this season. He has been judged very early.

What we saw today was a manager that isn't stubborn and just going to force his tactical way on his team whether it works or not. We saw a very pragmatic manager who learns from what happens in the course of the season and adapts with the environment. He nurtures his players. We also saw a manager who has enough experience at this level to make correct interpretations of what is happening. There's no "fake it til you make it" interviews, just an honest, informed guy doing his job.

I said earlier this week that the single most biggest challenge Frank has is to help us recover from 3 season hangover of conceding 60 goals in the league. In the last 2 or 3 games there was a danger that we were slipping into our old ways again. Frank put an immediate halt to that and now we stand at 15 games and 18 goals conceded. That is night and day from where we've been and is the absolute foundation for any football team to do well at both ends of the pitch.

Sure but they rested their best 3 players. Didn't work either way
Did they
As I say, I wouldn’t know because don’t watch them.
Today for sure looked like their first choice line with limited knowledge of their team I’ll admit

What I do know is they played Wednesday and we haven’t played anyone that I can think of who has also played midweek when we have.

Teams have had all week to plan for us and they won’t have had that today. And we capitalised on it after making a decent number of changes.

Personally I’m all for giving the manger credit for that and we have an even better scenario in our favour next weekend

For my part, if your post was in kind a response to mine, is that I'm coming at it from the angle wrt the players in midfields ability to play more expansive football, rather than Frank's desire or ability to line us up that way - i think a 4231 with our options for CM is a bit of a concern - today doesn't change that for me given how Brentford themselves played and not really testing us in that area

They key today is enjoy it
And let’s hope we see it again and again
That’s Frank showing he is learning if so

As much as I've been pushing for patience re Frank i wont get too excited over todays performance as i think Brentford were really quite poor, especially wrt standing off our midfielders. If everyone gave us time and space on the ball we'd have looked better in previous matches too. Today was encouraging, but we need to see how we cope when the opposition are battling more - i have reservations about our options for a CM2 and the ability to handle that, i liked what I saw from Gray and would like to see how he fares in this setup against a team more on it

That’s the thing with younger players - they can play on adrenaline and put in good v performances. But to deliver each week consistently is the goal and of course what Frank is working towards. We have 3 young player who look like they will be first team quality. They are going to make mistakes as they develop. I have confidence in Frank to bring them on though

I still don't know why we don't use the emergency injury rule and swap Tel for Solanke in the CL squad. No way is Solanke going to feature in our remaining 3 games now
It's really only one game, innit? You can name new players after the new year, no?

Edit: Dom is HG and Tel isn't, so scratch that.

Really good. Now it's time to string some performances and results together. Slavia Prague, Forest and Liverpool all very winnable at this point in time. Get through December unbeaten and who knows where we might end up in 2026.

Good win and glade to see Xavi level up his aggressiveness. He looks to me a very instinctive player and could do with more love. That drive for his goal and the run for his assist is what we lacked plenty from before - quick transitions and direct football at full pace.

Gray did very well in my opinion - he is a natural leader and will expect him to be our future captain in a Son-esque type of way

I would excuse Romero for that silly tackle from behind - he let his emotions get the better of him but it could have easily been a red because he wasn't in control and fortunate to get a solid contact with the ball

Kudus is exceptional when he has support.

Spence does a lot of work - I wonder if he can be better on the right? Because Porro looks uninterested in breaking a sweat to chase down the player once he's been passed. And there is nothing great about his crossing game - maybe one in ten is excellent... but he is very wasteful most of the time.

i would highlight we transition better without palhinha in the team. He is good for breaking up play and protecting a lead though. Richy scored but I can't wait for Solanke to be back.

Needed win at home and clean sheet. Onwards and upwards.

Well that was better today. Still a lot of frustrating moments when we refuse to pass forwards to open players.
But a lot better.

I'm still frustrated at Frank's use of subs. He waits far too long, several players blowing out their arses in the red zone, then the subs get 10 minutes which is pretty crap for them too after a week of training.

And it is bizarre to use only 4 subs, why not give a run out to one of Bergvall, Johnson, Tel? For one of Xavi/ Richie/ Gray? I guess Frank feels they were all vital and playing well, but Richie in particular was so deep into his red zone he'd gone into the crimson, then purple, then was edging into the violet.

I suppose Frank wanted Richie to head away late corners? But he can't play every game, he shouldn't start midweek for me. We know his injury history.

Palhinha 65
Odobert 74
Sarr 80
Danso 81
And yet I think he is rotating the squad like he's always managed 2 games a week, which is impressive and is always on his mind no doubt. I also think he has managed the injury situation very well. Yesterday was a sign we are starting to see some confidence return. Special mention to Archie Gray, Xavi Simons and Mo Kudus. They were outstanding yesterday. As we're the crowd.
