Archie Gray

He's been good at CB, most likely because he got a run of games there and was able to settle. Two games at DM with a totally changed team that isn't performing isn't enough of a sample to make a judgement. There's very very few 19 year olds that have played as many games this season as Gray.
Spot on.

People can point to individual teenagers stepping up, typically when the conditions are right or it's a super special young player or a combination of both.

Started the season at 18. First season in the PL. Filled in well in an unfamiliar role at CB in a team that was struggling. It's essentially unheard of.

Mentality wise, accepting that it's difficult to judge from the outside, he seems just utterly spot on. Unphased, professional, brave. Quickly became a player we could rely on. So important for a young player developing.

So many bows to his string. Technically particularly, but also an athlete and smartness to play multiple roles and unfamiliar roles. For me key attributes that seem difficult to develop.

He just needs a bit of time imo. My feeling is that he's unlikely to need much time. But even if it takes him a couple of years he'll still be a young player.

Maybe he is not rated as highly as we rate him?

I was actually surprised he never got a call up for the main England squad during the season, to hardly play in the under 21 Euros has taken me a bit by surprise.

He's 19 years old.
In an under 21's team, the whole age thing goes out of the window when you are playing within your age group. I am not saying he is not good i am saying he may be a little more rated here than he is for the under 21's. In the premier league full of experienced players of all ages then being 19 is a massive difference but at under 21 level its a smaller pool of players and he is clearly only seen as a last resort player hence not playing in that tournament very often.

He's the 2nd youngest person in the squad with many (including the person playing in front of him) being 22. They have more experience and have been playing in the squad for 2 years. Some have full england caps.
He has just turned 19 and is still developing. Nobody even knows yet what position he will become.

Why would he have gotten called up for the main England squad??? He basically never even played DM all season and sure he filled in at CB but his performances there are being massively overrated. He did well for a 18/19 year filling in an unusual position, but you really thought he was one of the top 3 or 4 English CBs at times last season? Did you see see our defence? Did you see the number of goals we conceded whether he was playing or not?

The boy has potential but c'mon he's hardly the Yamal of DMs.

You don’t have to be one of the best to get called up, he done very well in multiple positions last season and was solid and one of our better players. Its not like youngsters have never been selected for England before after playing just 5 games. He is a utility player who can play across the back 4 and in midfield, i thought that would have been ideal for England to have a look at at the time.

I would be shocked if he had gotten called up unless there was a massive injury crisis. England has enough depth in all the positions he plays in. If he were Scottish, Irish, or Welsh then I would expect a call up.

With Gray, I see he's played a load of football in the last 2 seasons and I believe the club will have one eye on his long term physical welfare. He started very young in senior first teams and we don't need another Sess on our hands.

I can't be sure how much he'll play this season but I have a feeling he'll improve again. His challenge might be proving that him and Bergvall can play together. I'm not talking about not having complimentary football skills either. It's more about their tender ages in the PL/CL environment.

But people on here were crying because Ange wasn't picking Gray at CM. The fact is he's talented but people on here massively over rate where he's at, he can't even get in the England U21s at CM let alone big boy football in the PL. CM is one of the toughest positions to play and heaven forbid maybe Ange had legitimate reasons for him barely getting picked there....

I am glad there are some who see it the way i do. He may turn out to be a GREAT player for us in time but i think some of the praise he has been given so far at both CB and FB is a little over the top.

I hope he turns out to be a real star for us but lets give him the time to grow before we/some go overboard with his efforts so far.

It's the usual brick with football fans. Either world class or utter brick.
For an 18 year old in his first season in the prem he did good. Filled in where needed. He's nowhere near the finished article and may never be.
Let him develop though. Support him.

Indeed, the usual thing with kids is that they are still a little up and down. He has talent for sure but i hope we do not build him up before he has got the consistancy and maturity to show it.
