Just to correct something another contributor to this subject has asserted - Fauci never dismissed lab origins publicly, he said that the science community bellieved it had not broken that way however he was open to whatever answer could be proven to be accurate.

For some wider context, here is a contributor to the publication Science writing an open-letter to the current head of the CDC and also NiH, Jay Bhattacharya. If you take a look at him a little more closely, it is clear that science is not the most important criteria for such a position. I also have to say that personally, I find the timing of this particular hearing enormously curious. Finally, if people really want to get worried about where covid came from/whether it was a lab leak, then we'll need to go a whole lot deeper into a whole plethora of other areas of both government and private business...I always wondered what happened to the scientists from the former Soviet Union who suddenly, overnight, were out of a job but flush with both knowledge and potentially devastating 'science'. In a world of steroided capitalism, we could take a guess...or sigh, hope for the best, get a cup of tea and watch some Royale Family reruns!

It was me and I have already stuck my hand up on that. I still think the sound bites are important as it what plays to the audience and in this post-news world that is probably more important than the 'truth'. But it was a quick comment in response to Rob's initial posy about pleading the 5th and reflective of what Fauci's team had been saying about Paul wanting a 'gotcha' from him.

Thinking more on it, this fits in with this Administration's modus operandi of debunking anything they don't like and this is much more about a further attack on science generally, further defunding of scientific institutions or having more Republican/MAGA control over the funding streams and about having a single name spacegoat to hang the blame on, especially someone who is obviously Deep State as he has worked in government for 40+ years.

Not interested in discussing that with you. I was simply commenting on your breathtaking assertion that 'genuine' asylum seekers from wartorn countries 'will' already be in safe neighbouring countries. In fact, perhaps I should marvel at your ominpotent knowledge here and simnply ask how you can be so sure that all 'genuine' asylum seekers take that course...

So what are you saying? That Anthony Fauci is solely the reason for the covid era issues and mistakes? Do you not think there are several figures from the time who should also be subject to this level of intense scrutiny? Let's face it, this whole thing does not look like a search for further information.

Because publicly stating that it may be man made or originated in China would have achieved what exactly? Perhaps being a grown up means you have to play politically safe and base it on the actual provable evidence at the time, rather than gut feeling. Perhaps because he could predict what trump and his brickshow of an administration would have done if he didn't play a straight hand in public and how many more may have died rather than just the 1 million that Trump and Biden managed to bungle their way to.

His private thoughts are his private thoughts and not what is best practice in reality, and in fact all policy decisions were made by the administration rather than him.

I can totally understand taking the 5th to prevent that conflict between his personal thoughts and his professional conduct being decontextualised by Paul, Trump, the Brain Worm or Dr Oz, be it for a soundbite gotcha, a further criminal proceeding or just as political BS.

Not going to stop it overnight so surely reducing it by over a third is progress?

How do you eliminate it? Not sure that is the ideal unless there are genuine, accessible asylum routes available (such as for Ukrainians but not for most others).

A further move would be stopping selling arms to genocidal arseholes in the Horn of Africa, pushing Net Zero globally so that the 80% of Africa doesn't become uninhabitable and restoring a meaningful Aid budget.

And possibly coming to meaningful deals on 'Third World' (horrible phrase) debts (although these are linked to undemocratic leaderships and vanity projects as much as anything else so there are issues within those countries that releasing them from debt wouldn't solve).
