Micky van de Ven

I was never convinced that Micky had much time for the one before Frank either to be fair. Ultimately, he felt comfortable walking into Ange's office and asking for a change in tactics because the defence were getting too exposed.

You get the feeling that RDZ doesn't quite have the same open door policy as the previous two managers though. We do know that RDZ has called Micky the best defender in the PL and put the armband on him.

It could be third time lucky for Micky in his Spurs career.

Didn’t he do an interview when Frank was here saying he still believes in the football that Ange wanted to play and spoke of the respect he had for him? I think he adored Ange.

As mentioned above he’s a defender that likes to attack

Not at the top of the game.

My issues with him are his positioning and how bad he is in the air. That’s 99% of the job as far as I’m concerned.

Didn't we all want Ange ball to succeed though? I know I did when I first saw it. It didn't take so long to feel it had flaws though.

When Pep talked favourably about Ange's football I thought to myself "I see what you did there" :tearsofjoy:

With Micky, his on-pitch body language didn't always back up those comments you mention. I think he was a player that did get Ange's tactics and give them a good go. I never felt he was comfortable with the offside strategy though especially in the deep areas that those players were being asked to do it. He would have been OK with the high line offside though but not the gaps in front of him and the runners coming at him because the press lines were broken. That problem was exaggerated with injuries and having backups in place. I think it was even worse for Romero actually because of the type of defender he was.

I do think we will see these defenders becoming way more comfortable with RDZ's systems though.

In VdV’s (and Romero’s) defense they have never had a proper midfield to screen in front of them.

It just isn’t 99% of the job when playing in a high line though. He still has to do a bit of it, and he showed in the Europa League final he could be effective doing it, but in general playing in a high line brings the best out of him.

And I think there’s a difference between the team falling back because the opposition has beaten our press, but where there’s still a bit of the chaos we are putting on them because we’re trying to win the ball, and just sitting back and inviting crosses with the opposition able to pick their spots. In the latter, I think Micky struggles. If it’s the former, he’s better around the box.

We conceded 60+ goals playing both tactics. Neither strategy worked.

I think it's pretty clear he had time for Ange mate. You've altered history a bit there from what I can see too; as it is said, both VdV and Romero sought to speak with Postecoglu about a shift in approach and he was up for it. Sounds like people working together. It's also known how shocked he was that Postecoglu got canned after winning the Europa.

I know it's unpalatable to think that Frank was disliked in isolation, but alas, I think it's true.

Because it’s not also just about tactics. It’s also about selection, fitness, confidence, form etc. No tactic is inherently good or bad in isolation. The fact that we conceded a similar amount of goals playing two widely different styles proves it.

I don't disagree, I don't believe our defenders were good enough despite their overhyping. That's why im more than happy to break up the disastership and move at least one of them on.
