Cristian Romero

Agreed but I only have a limited amount of things I can worry about at any one time and where our injured captain is on Sunday isn’t one if them. Whether we’re playing Lincoln next season definitely is

You seem to be missing the point - No one was suggesting he had run off without permission. The fact is as usual the captain who is paid handsomely by his club is prioritising his national team ahead of the clubs most important game for years.

It's rehab not keyhole surgery. He could and would have continued his rehab here for a few more days before leaving to Argentina after this game if he wanted but no - as usual he can't wait to run off back to Argentina. Captains usually go above and beyond, the saddest thing there is no surprise whatsoever he has chosen to do this....

Is that what you read into it?

The manager has said "Not all leaders are the same, Ben Davies (a player out of contract effectively) and he asked to stay with us and he wants to stay with his team in the lodge with his teammates, but Romero is preparing for the World Cup"

I can't read that any other way than Romero has made a choice, here is an example of a better choice, Romero is concerned about himself/world cup not one of the most important games in the club's modern history. I think he's gone, it's what RDZ said early in his tenure, if a player doesn't want to be here, we don't want them.

I'd still take a very dim view of it personally. He got permission? That's the least I'd have expected. The fact he isn't here is a complete lack of leadership but, sadly, very much indicative of his captaincy this season if reports are to be believed. Habitually late, late after the NLD following a dressing down from Frank, posting negatively on SM about the club before getting sent off for being reckless v Man U when we were already down to minimum numbers and fighting for our lives.

Overall, as captains go, he's been the worst one I remember in our shirt. People won't forget this though. If we go down on Sunday, regardless of the fact he hasn't played, he'll be the poster boy for our relegation and for so much of what is wrong at our club and rightly so.

Would happily see him out the door in the summer for a decent fee.

I think you’re spot on. We should give Romero the benefit of the doubt until the circumstances are confirmed officially. Too often, we condemn people on the strength of an internet whisper. VdV was getting it not so long ago.

If it is true, I’ll be immensely fudged off but I’ll hold my tongue for the moment.
Indeed, sadly haters have to hate.

To be honest i have far more things on my mind that worrying where a player is that is injured and can not play anyway.

Takes all sorts though i guess.

I usually would agree but this is more than that.

I think, taking everything into account, I’m pretty disgusted by Romero to be honest. He is the club captain. I simply don’t understand why, even if you accept that he needs to work with Argentina physios to get ready for the World Cup, that this couldn’t have waited a few more days? He shouldn’t be asking for permission, he shouldn’t be putting RDZ in that position. It’s frankly bizarre. The fact that RDZ compares him to Davies I think says a lot. He’s trying not to make this a story and trying to keep the focus on the dignity aspect of what the Everton game represents. But it says something for sure.

The only mitigating thing is if RDZ didn’t want Romero around. But that opens a whole other box of questions on how we could have been so stupid to appoint a captain that is actually such a bad presence as to not be welcome on the final crucial game.

Really for any other angle, it makes no sense as to why the club captain wouldn’t do everything to be there. Completely bizarre behaviour.

He obviously believes he won't be here next season even if we stay up.

That's fine by my. Never wanted him as captain and he is over rated as well. Fine with Danso and vuskovic to come back.

I’ve found the criticism of Romero this season ridiculous, well OTT and I’ve stuck up for him, but this is different. He’s the club captain, being in Argentina 5 days earlier will make virtually zero difference to his World Cup prep, let’s call it out for what this is, he wanted to watch his old club play in a final over watching his current club, who he is captain of, play in arguably their most important game since 1977.

RDZ’s quotes re Davies said everything you need to know IMO.

For me, club captain status with his team no matter what. If it was Argentina and he was injured, he will still be there for them.

Ben Davies should be sorting about his next contract, not us. He is exactly what we need as a leader.

Pretty sure he has travelled with the Argentina squad for qualifiers even when injured/suspended for the games previously
