  • Spurs fans not guilty of racist chants - Don't believe the (media) hype

What a shame the media frenzy that ensued in the wake of the witch hunt and subsequent convictions of a 42 yr old long-standing Spurs season ticket holder Ian Trow and his 14 yr old son hasn't extended to reflect this conviction being quashed.

We all know by now that the sensationalist media went into virtual meltdown in its haste to brand the 16 Spurs fans identified by the Hampshire police (out of the 2500 present) as "racist and homophobic". The "racist" part of that charge was soon dropped in favour of the latter as soon as they realised they had jumped the gun (as usual). We all know the media (in particular the red tops) are 90% sound bite and 10% substance at best.

    This drama all unfolded after the game between Portsmouth and Spurs on the 28th September 2008 where Sol Campbell himself and (supposedly) Portsmouth fans complained about the chanting directed toward the player himself. It even led the now Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp to quote;

"How do you do that in front of your kids? What kind of a nutter must you be? What kind of human being must you be when you take your little kids to football and shout filth? It can't be right".

Nothing like kicking a man when he is down. Not only had he already been deemed a racist and a homophobe in the eyes of the media, he was also accused of being a bad father.

The pictures of the Spurs 16 were shown all over the media and even on the government's own Crimestoppers website where they made the number 1 spot in the list of the nations "most wanted". They even managed to knock armed bank robbers and rapists off the top spot. Glad to see the government didn't get caught up in all the hype.

Eleven of the 16 Spurs fans subsequently made themselves known to the Hampshire police. Later 4 were to plead guilty of indecent chanting and 7 not guilty. The seven that pleaded not guilty were automatically banned by Spurs and had their season tickets revoked despite not having been convicted of any crime. These seven fans were then offered police cautions of which 5 accepted under pressure from the police to halt both threats of court appearances and the media attention. Ian Trow and his son stuck their guns in the belief they were innocent of any wrongdoing after which they were offered a reprimand which they again declined.

In May, Ian and his son, despite there being no evidence to support the charge, were found guilty under the premise that "we can prove these chants were sung, we can prove you attended the match, therefore you must have been singing these songs".
This was to all intents and purposes a show trial, in front of national media (having been invited by the Police). Ian and his son were given 3 year football banning orders and of course, his photograph splashed all over the tabloids.

Last week they had a full re-trial at Portsmouth Crown Court in front of the most senior judge in Hampshire. After the prosecution showed their evidence the judge, after a mere 2 minutes of deliberation and before the defence had even put their case, came to the conclusion they were "Not guilty and had no case to answer". The judge then went on to reprimand the CPS over the fact the case had even been brought into his courtroom. All costs were awarded to Ian Trow.

The Media silence is deafening. The press maxim "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story" appears to hold a true as ever.

  • Nutter Naylors West Ham (A) Diary

The big day. Wake up at 8.00 no point trying to get back off to sleep - im already buzzing about the game.My first visit to Upton Park in probably 20-25 years.

Poodled about trying to kill time before i leave at 9.l5.  Get a call from my mum at 8.45 which set of a small panic as i think there maybe a health issue with the old man (& a chance of missing the game)  but after a 5 min con flab, all is well,  Phew.

Set off in the car to Tunbridge Wells, 25 mins later in parked up & go & buy my train ticket. Seems cheaper than normal but im not complaining.

My ST holding friend (Ms S) arrives. We board 10.10 train for an uneventful trip to London (which isn't always the case)

Jump in a cab to The Hamilton Hall (£7.20 with tip) & have a pint of cider in my hand by 11.05 which hits the spot nicely.

My WHU cousin makes an excuse not to meet (i tell him we dont bite!)

There are plenty of Yids about but a surprisingly muted atmosphere. Very few people are in colours. Ms S & I are weaing Spurs polo/T-shirts. I did  think about wearing civvies but i thought, "f@ck it" - i am Tottenham & I'll be buggered if im being intimidated by a bunch of Spammers. S & L arrive at 11.30, both wearing Tottenham apparel of some description, so all of us are in colours. It is all S's first visit to UP in around the same time as me & L's first ever away game - not a bad way to pop your away cherry.

About 12.30, after a couple more pints & a bacon roll we decide its time to head off to the match. As usual the tubes are rubbish & after a 15 min wait we get a circle line train to Tower Hill & luckily (as the need for toilet facilities are getting quite acute!)  a district line train is just pulling in. After the brief walk to UP we arrive at 1.20. All very genial & no sign of any aggravation.

No need for a match report suffice to say there were some excellent chants & a cracking atmosphere. I was seriously disappointed with the Hammers support it really was dire apart from when they scored....."only sing when you're winning".  There were a couple of noteworthy incidents, when a couple of Yids were being escorted out of the ground some Spammers were giving him a bit of verbal he made a dash towards them but got quickly restrained  by the stewards & likewise, a Hammer was being taken out & all of a sudden his head popped up above the wall & he was really having some "banter" with the Spurs.  A guy in  pink shirt took plenty of stick from us throughout the first  half.

Had some text banter with my cousin, he said "at least you have bought a few more here than you took to Beijing" to which i replied, "you lot actually made more noise in Beijing than you are today" etc.....

Spurs singing died off a bit in the middle of the second half but i think it was just because we were all so nervous, It really picked up after that though & was immense thereafter.

Well, obvioulsy we all left the ground  in high spirits.  Just as we got to the tube i heard some verbals but thought no more of it but as we were trying to find the end of the queue we heard a commotion & saw 4 Spammers following & calling out a young (early 20's) but big Yid. All of a sudden he turned around and waded into them. One was holding a portion of chips (bizarely) & bam he went down, he was still holding on to his chips but with a bit more ketchup than he had originally bargained for, He started waking off again but the other three were still on his tail  & again, he turned back & waded in, giving another one a good heavy right hand to the chin but before it developed any further the old bill turned up. 4 Hammers on to 1 Yid & they still came off worst,

We pushed in the queue half-way along & got home without any more excitement. Got in at 6.10.

Great day with good friends & a great result.

    Bring on the Brum.
