Groundshare? Use your head, not your heart.

Ground share. What’s your preference?

With the rumours flying around that Spurs are finally about to redevelop The Lane which would mean us playing elsewhere for 2 seasons there have been rumours in the papers of where we’d play in the mean time. Wembley has apparently tried to charge us too much money (no surprise there when a hotdog is nearly £7) and the Spurs board have dismissed out of hand the option of sharing Cashburden Grove with the Scum down the road and instead, it is rumoured, are considering a ground share with the Spammers.

This may be controversial with some but surely The Emirates would be a far superior ground to share than the Boleyn for several reasons.

Firstly: Capacity. Emirates holds near 60,000 where as the Boleyn holds a little over 35,000. Surely if we’re building a 52,000 seater stadium we want to be playing in a ground that would accommodate the “new” season ticket holders. A 16,000 increase at the Lane would probably see an additional 10,000 season tickets allowed. Why not get that £7 million in for an extra 2 years? Then just move that straight into the “new” Lane. The increased gate receipts for 2 seasons would go some way to paying off the stadium loan (or at least the interest) before it’s even finished.

Secondly: Area. What’s the preference for the fans. 4 miles down Seven Sisters Road or the far Eastern end of the “oh so reliable” District line? You think getting away from WHL is tough then try leaving a game at West Ham. They don’t have the option of Mainline or tube we do. They have 1 not very large tube station and traffic problems as bad if not worse than ours. At least with the Emirates you have the choice of Piccadilly, Victoria or mainline within a 10 minute walk and with it not being too far from WHL (about a dozen stops down the 259 bus route) we could still drink in our regular pubs if we wanted too after matches (or before late ones).

Thirdly: Current residents. Now I know that being a Spurs fan it’s in our genes to hate Arsenal but West Ham feel the same about us. As hard as it is for us to acknowledge most Arsenal fans no longer see us as any form of rival. They’ve been in a separate league to us for most of the last 10 years. They’re now, for the most part, as much a “prawn sandwich brigade” as Manchester Utd. There are, obviously, some old school rivalries but fortunately football has moved on for the majority of fans from the “olden days” of pitched battles between the 2 sets of supporters. West Ham, however, seem to have a hatred for Tottenham bordering on obsessive. Who’s fans was it that came down mob handed to smash up one of our pubs on a Wednesday lunchtime when we were facing each other in a Carling Cup match. Wasn’t Arsenal, it was West Ham! Now I’m old enough to have been there, run away from that and the thought of dealing with West Ham “fans” that have been banned from travelling to away games so will have nothing to do on the days that we use the ground other than hang around their local area and cause trouble quite frankly does not appeal. Several people on this site have already expressed reservations about taking their kids to games over there. West Ham are still trouble. It’s only a couple of years since they were in the “Championship” causing trouble with the likes of Millwall and Cardiff.

So in short, my dear Daniel, if you have the option of a choice between Emirates and Boleyn don’t just think the supporters won’t like it try asking them. The vast majority of fans will instinctively say NO WAY quite vehemently to a ground share with “the enemy” but logically and financially the benefits would be there for all to see once the initial shock had subsided.

Or is that your plan all along??

At last someone talking sense!

If it’s available Spurs SHOULD move to the Emirates whilst WHL is redeveloped.  West Ham is too far away and too small.

If both Board's are OK with the deal then the only sensible opposition (that’s ignoring the arrogant Spurs fans who would oppose the move) to move would be the local residents.

I live ten minutes walk from Arsenal's ground and know that the extra amount of fans at the games since their move has had a huge knock on effect to the area.  Locals are regularly caught up and not able to get buses or go in/out of the tube stations before and after games.  If Spurs shared the ground then this would happen every weekend, instead of every other, and at least once or twice during the week.

Spurs and Arsenal have shared twice before that I know of, be it a very long time ago though.  The first time was when Spurs played at Highbury during the First World War, the second was when Arsenal played at the Lane during the Second World War.  Spurs fans should bite their lip and except a temporary move to the Emirates Stadium and stop acting like ignorant fools.  They would get a new improved White Hart Lane out of it so it’s got to be the best deal.

I think some Spurs fans think a new WHL can be built over night, without the team having to play anywhere else.  Unfortunately, like building a successful team it is not that easy!

Ground sharing with the Scum for a couple of seasons would be the most sensible thing to do in terms of logistics for the fans and transport. It is obviously morally objectionable but the ground is newly built, with good facilities, has an improved transport network and as has been pointed out allows us the chance to boost Season Ticket numbers. If you can get past the knuckle dragging stigma and the need for our fans to respect the stadium while we are tenants then it makes perfect sense. It made perfect sense for the Woolwich Pikeys when the tables were turned and they needed our assistance in the past.

I'd prefer playing in our rivals state of the art stadium for 2 seasons with record crowds, improved transport etc then having to go and slum it in a shithole like the Boleyn ground. Wembley would be nice but for the simple fact it is fucking miles away from our core fanbase and it would be half empty for many of the games which would be very sad for a club who usually pride themselves on the atmosphere and numbers they can generate.

Ask me tomorrow and I might have changed my mind but of all the options other than no ground share at all it sadly makes the best sense. The benefit being that it would mean that White Hart Lane as it stands would be redevelopped rather than us selling out and moving down the road to some soulless bowl.

Emirates would be best and for practical reasons too, i.e. we have to alternate home games with them which is not the case with West Ham/Chelsea. I'm sure it would be a nightmare for the PL to arrange fixtures with Spurs, West ham and Arsenal having to alternate home games.

However, its not our place to be concerned with PL practicalities. There is no shame in playing there for a couple of seasons, its not like we're Charlton in '87 where we are homeless and need to lodge somewhere. I live near Cheshunt and the prospect of travelling thru London and back out to get to West Ham is not too appealing, plus there is the hightened prospects of trouble.

The pro's of using the Emirates far outweigh the con's so I would certainly be in favour of it in principle although I'd prefer to be able to use Wembley for the Arsenal/Chelsea/Man Utd/big cup games etc.

I guess its all down to how much Arsenal/West Ham/FA want to accomodate us though before we can start stating where we want to go.

I would take a ground share at the Emirates.

Why?  I live 10mins walk away and thats got to be preferable to trying to get to Wet Spam on the district line.

But as someone has already said - I suspect the locals will be up in arms about this as its already chaos around here when the Scum are playing.

im never going to see spurs play there. the only reason i can see is money, we can play at Loftus Road and sell it out every week, we can play anywhere in principle, but if we use our principles then the emirates is the very last option, if it is even called one.

sheer nonsense to play there.

As a gooner, I have to say It would be proper for AFC to help you lot out. We played home matches at the lane after the war so some payback is due. Both clubs know their history and it would be a good way to put upstarts like Chelsea in their place.

Financially it would suit both clubs since you get a more cost effective solution than wembley and we'd be commercial about it too.   We could structure it so you'd get strung for any damage so I'm not overly concerned about vandalism to the stadium.

My big worry is that armies of spurs fans marching thorugh islington will mean that a lot of gooner pubs are bound to get smashed up. there is a minority of fans (on both sides) who will want it and its naive to assume it wont happen.

If you can share for 2 years then why not permanently? It's not ideal but in the current climate we need to think seriously about investing £300+ million in a ground that is empty every other weekend. I've been to the Milan derby and there fanatical fans now accept it as essential to provide both with a fantastic ground to play at. I know a large percentage of Spurs fnas will be appalled at the thought of sharing with Arsenal but I think we need to seriously explore it.
